England vs Sweden - LIVE!

England are one win away from Euro 2022 glory on home soil after a stunning 4-0 semi-final victory against Sweden.

Beth Mead continued her march to the Golden Boot with a sixth goal of the tournament to get the Lionesses up and running, before Wiegman’s side ran riot after the break. Lucy Bronze doubled the advantage and super-sub Alessia Russo then backheeled a sensational third goal through the legs of the goalkeeper as she continued her impressive record off the bench. Russo will be hoping it’s enough to earn her a start in the final.

Fran Kirby capped a perfect night at Bramall Lane, against the second-best team in the world if rankings are to be believed. Attention now turns to Wembley, where France or Germany will be the opponents. It will be England’s third appearance in the final of a European Championships - they have never before gone all the way.

England 4 - 0 Sweden

Transformed Lionesses march on

23:16 , Matt Verri

England are on the brink of history after reaching the European Championship final with a 4-0 thrashing of Sweden at Bramall Lane, writes Dan Kilpatrick.

On one of the Lionesses’ greatest nights, Sarina Wiegman’s side set up a meeting with France or Germany at Wembley on Sunday with a magnificent display of ruthlessness and skill against the side ranked second in the world.

Substitute Alessia Russo stole the show with a stunning and audacious backheeled finish to make it 3-0 and there were standout performances across England’s XI.

But the victory felt bigger than individuals or even this team in terms of what it will do to further enhance women’s football in this country.

England are capturing the country’s imagination and growing the game in real time, and the final promises to be a watershed moment for the sport and the squad, who could quickly become household names after a performance of surprising dominance in Sheffield.

Beth Mead 9

Yet another brilliant performance from the Arsenal forward, who is having a dream tournament. Took her goal superbly and claimed an assist too. As Ian Wright perfectly put it, she’s a “goalscoring monster”.

Incredible performance.

21:46 , Matt Verri

90 mins: Three minutes added on.

Sweden need five goals. They’d probably settle for four to take it to extra-time.

21:43 , Matt Verri

88 mins: Party atmosphere as Daly, Mead and Stanway are repalced. Minutes for Greenwood, Kelly and Scott.

Lionesses just a couple of minutes away from getting the celebrations started!

21:41 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Yellow card for Stanway, doesn’t look particularly bothered with it.

Ball floated long into the England box, Williamson quickly across to slam the door shut as the shot is about to come in. Russo is then all the way back to clear.

21:37 , Matt Verri

82 mins: That’s not what Hemp needs. 4-0 up, life good and she gets a ball absolutely hammered into the side of her face.

Play paused as she gets a bit of attention after that painful blow.

21:35 , Matt Verri

79 mins: More great goalkeeping from Earps, claims a cross into the box. England giving Sweden nothing.

Wiegman... showing nothing on the touchline. As calm as ever!

GOAL! England 4-0 Sweden | Fran Kirby 76'

21:32 , Matt Verri

IT’S FOUR! ENGLAND MARCHING INTO THE FINAL!

That settles that. Ball poked through to Kirby, goes for the lobbed effort 20 yards out with Lindahl off her line.

The goalkeeper gets plenty on it but lets the ball through her hands and it trickles into the back of the net!

Russo thriving as super-sub

21:30 , Matt Verri

“After almost every game, there has been a case for Russo to start the next ahead of White,” writes Dan Kilpatrick.

“But it doesn’t really feel like an important question anymore because she’s so effective from the bench and has already scored the two goals of the tournament.”

21:27 , Matt Verri

71 mins: That has surely finished off the Swedish charge.

England not content with just sitting back though, they’re still looking to get forward. Russo with yet another wonderful cameo off the bench.

GOAL! England 3-0 Sweden | Alessia Russo 68’

21:24 , Matt Verri

Superb from Hemp, looks so dangerous whenever she gets the ball.

Plays it across the face of goal, nobody there for what should have been a tap-in. It’s at least got England up the pitch after that spell of Sweden pressure.

Another brilliant move... Russio denied!

BUT NOT THIS TIME! SENSATIONAL FROM RUSSO! Yet another goal off the bench and it’s an outrageous backheel!

Simon Collings at Bramall Lane

21:22 , Matt Verri

Mary Earps had the quietest group stage of any goalkeeper, but my word has she stepped up in the knockouts. Another huge save to deny Sweden.

21:20 , Matt Verri

65 mins: England throwing themselves at every loose ball, not giving Sweden a second. That’s brilliant from Asllani though to find space, Daly blocks the cross. Another corner coming up.

It’s messy, Earps doesn’t get there... cleared off the line! Not convincing at all.

Back in, Blackstenius with the effort and Earps tips it over! That’s superb from the goalkeeper.

21:18 , Matt Verri

63 mins: Corner Sweden, inswinger right into the six-yard box but it’s into the side-netting.

So many bodies right in front of Earps, she’ll be very glad to see that go harmlessly out of play.

21:17 , Matt Verri

61 mins: Bjorn left in a heap on the ground, Daly and Kirby both clatter into her in the air.

Sweden had 33 shots against Belgium and only scored in the last minute - taking chances is not their strength. At the moment they’re finding it hard enough to even create them.

Simon Collings at Bramall Lane

21:14 , Matt Verri

White heads off to a standing ovation but, if England make Sunday’s final, surely her place is under threat. Russo has offered more than her in one minute.

21:13 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Russo on in place of White and it’s nearly an outrageous impact!

Drives forward on the right, fires a stunning low cross into the box and Hemp looks to set to score at the far post. Flying onto it, someone misses from a couple of yards. So close to a third!

21:11 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Sweden still carrying a threat, particularly out on their left wing.

Ball clipped into the box, Blackstenius wins the header in front of Williamson but can’t get enough on it. Flicked wide.

Bronze delivers on big stage

21:09 , Matt Verri

“There have been suggestions that Lucy Bronze is not the player she once was at these finals but how she has stepped up tonight,” writes Dan Kilpatrick.

“A goal and an assist for the right-back.”

21:08 , Matt Verri

53 mins: Daly does just about enough at the back post to stop the two yellow shirts behind her having a tap-in.

Kaneryd and Seger are on for Sweden. Still more than 35 minutes for them to get themselves back in it.

Simon Collings at Bramall Lane

21:06 , Matt Verri

It was only yesterday that Sweden were moaning about VAR, it will be intriguing to see what they say about that goal later on.

21:05 , Matt Verri

Brief VAR check, with Hemp standing in front of the goalkeeper and potentially in an offside position.

Goal stands though - England are in control!

GOAL! England 2-0 Sweden | Lucy Bronze 48'

21:03 , Matt Verri

First attack of the half, ball runs through to Hemp and she’s in behind after good work from Kirby. Pulls it back to Mead, shot blocked and it’s a corner for England.

ENGLAND DOUBLE THEIR LEAD!

Mead takes it herself, swung in deep and Bronze is there to nod it back across goal and into the far corner!

Back underway!

21:00 , Matt Verri

Here we go again. Time to find out if England can complete the job!

More Mead celebrations!

20:57 , Matt Verri

20:54 , Matt Verri

More possession for England, more shots, more shots on target, more goals.

All the stats are in the favour of the Lionesses, but Sweden won’t care. They’ve had some really dangerous moments, particularly on the counter.

They might find that more and more difficult though - won’t be quite the same space available behind Bronze should England remain in front as the second-half goes on.

Six for Mead!

20:49 , Matt Verri

HT: England 1-0 Sweden

20:46 , Matt Verri

About two seconds of added time and that will be half-time.

England 45 minutes away from the Euro 2022 final, after Beth Mead’s strike. Open game though and Sweden will still feel they’re right in it.

(REUTERS)

20:43 , Matt Verri

43 mins: England with a sustained spell of possession, happy to take the sting out of things and try and see this through to half-time.

Sweden win it back, Asllani somehow holds the ball up and keeps possession. Her low cross is mopped up by Daly though.

20:40 , Matt Verri

40 mins: Stanway continues to operate a policy of shooting on sight, buoyed by her effort against Spain. Can’t really blame her but it’s not coming off tonight... yet.

Earps with a very composed pass out to Bright, who takes no chances and boots it up the pitch. Wise decision.

20:37 , Matt Verri

37 mins: Almost two! England are on the charge.

Ball played through to Stanway, looks to square it for White but it’s just about cleared away. Stanway clips it back in, Lindahl off her line to claim.

Simon Collings at Bramall Lane

20:36 , Matt Verri

What did Ian Wright call Beth Mead, “a goalscoring monster”?

GOAL! England 1-0 Sweden | Beth Mead 34'

20:34 , Matt Verri

MEAD DOES IT AGAIN FOR ENGLAND!

Her sixth goal of the tournament and the Lionesses take the lead!

Hemp’s cross runs through to Bronze, who puts it back into the box. Mead controls it and then fires into the far corner, superb finish.

20:32 , Matt Verri

32 mins: Heavy challenge from Mead and she then slides in to try and keep the ball in play, but can’t do so.

Then it’s White’s turn to fly back, trying to make up for losing the ball. Gives away the free-kick to Sweden in a dangerous position.

20:29 , Matt Verri

29 mins: Good again from Hemp, direct running as she drives into the box and wins a corner for England.

Mead over to take, Bronze heads it back across goal but nobody is following in at the back post.

England need more composure

20:27 , Matt Verri

“Lauren Hemp is catching the eye but Ellen White and Georgia Stanway have both snatched at passes from the winger, leading to tame shots,” writes Dan Kilpatrick.

“England lacking a bit of composure so far in the final third.”

20:26 , Matt Verri

26 mins: Bit of a quieter spell in the match, after the chaotic opening. Not quite so much space on offer.

Daly’s place at left-back was in doubt coming into the match but she’s been confident in everything she’s done so far.

20:23 , Matt Verri

23 mins: Stanway getting into some great positions.

It opens up for her 20 yards out, urged to shoot as the Swedish shirts fly in to close her down. Cleverly worked onto her left foot, but it’s then a weak effort dragged at goal.

20:21 , Matt Verri

21 mins: England starting to get a bit of control. Stanway drives forward, eventually plays it out wide to Hemp.

She has space to run into, plays it into the box and White on the stretch sends a tame effort straight at Lindahl.

Simon Collings at Bramall Lane

20:19 , Matt Verri

Not even the tiniest hint of a Mexican wave so far, an indication at how intense this game is.

20:19 , Matt Verri

19 mins: Both sides continue to have success coming forward, Sweden’s turn to win a corner. Referee having a word with Bronze and Blackstenius.

Cleared away once, twice, three times by England before Mead wins a free-kick on the edge of the box and the Lionesses can finally get up the pitch.

England sloppy in early stages

20:16 , Matt Verri

“Unlike Spain, Sweden are moving the ball forward at every opportunity which is already stretching England,” writes Dan Kilpatrick.

“The Lionesses have been sloppy in the opening ten minutes but it’s clear there are going to be chances at either end.”

20:16 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Bronze back to Mead, whipped into the box and Eriksson flicks the header behind for a corner. Well defended.

Decent delivery in, White makes the run and gets there but the header loops wide.

20:14 , Matt Verri

14 mins: Incredible amount of space out there for both sides. Mead sets Kirby away, she doesn’t quite have enough pace though and England have to turn back.

Bronze then loses the ball and Rolfo can drive into the box. Gets a shove from Bronze which forces her wide and she fires the shot into the side-netting. All the problems for England coming down their right.

20:12 , Matt Verri

12 mins: Confident not a problem for Stanway, as you’d expect.

Mead flicks the ball forward, Stanway hammers the effort at goal from a fair way out and an almost impossible angle. Not much in her favour! Slices it high and wide.

Simon Collings at Bramall Lane

20:11 , Matt Verri

This game is already way more open than the Spain encounter. Both sides are happy to bomb forward and it’s leaving space in behind to counter.

20:10 , Matt Verri

10 mins: OFF THE BAR!

England just about hanging on here. Blackstenius gets on the end of the corner in front of Earps, headed onto the bar.

It’s now the Lionesses turn to break, Hemp dragged to the ground. Miraculously Bjorn has avoided a yellow card.

20:08 , Matt Verri

8 mins: Free-kick swung into the box by Sweden, too much on it though and comes to nothing.

Sweden on the break once again though as they win the ball back, England look vulnerable in transition. Jakobsson through again, scuffs the effort this time and tipped behind for a corner.

20:05 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Nearly perfect from England. Kirby pings a lovely ball over the top, Mead has made the run at the back post and gets on the end of it but the header is wide.

Without wishing to jinx anything, this is set up to be a brilliant match.

20:03 , Matt Verri

3 mins: Frantic start, so much space for both sides and it’s end-to-end. Sweden getting some success down their left in the space that Bronze has left behind.

Heavy pass rolls through to Earps who urges her team-mates to slow things down and calm the situation. Asllani pushing up and marking Walsh very tightly.

20:01 , Matt Verri

1 mins: Sweden should be ahead inside 20 seconds!

Wow. They win the ball back up the pitch, Stanway losing it and Sweden are away on the break. Jakobsson is played through by a lovely pass and Earps has to produce a great save with her feet.

Simon Collings at Bramall Lane

20:00 , Matt Verri

A cracking atmosphere here at Bramall Lane. There’s the odd smattering of yellow, but otherwise it’s all white shirts. Sarina Wiegman has told them to bring the energy and they are so far.

KICK-OFF!

Here we go!

England vs Sweden for a place in the Euro 2022 final - France or Germany will be the opponents at Wembley.

Players are out to a huge ovation at Bramall Lane.

Time for the anthems and then we’ll be ready to get this semi-final up and running!

No sign of nerves

19:52 , Matt Verri

Wiegman so, so calm ahead of kick-off as you’d expect. That will certainly be rubbing off on the players.

Major tournament semi-final, on home soil... huge stage for the Lionesses against a really tough opponent in Sweden.

Kick-off in just under ten minutes now!

Crowd pleaser!

Some thoughts from Fran Kirby

19:40 , Matt Verri

“As the tournament has grown, we have been walking down the river and seen people leaning over and going, ‘Well done, girls - we’re supporting you’.

“If we get the chance to win in the semi-final and get through to the final, I think it will be incredible for people in this country to have something to celebrate and enjoy. We want to do that as much as possible.

“As much as we want to win, we want to put a smile on people’s faces. They may be going through a hard time in terms of the fuel costs and the cost of living now, so hopefully we can give people an escape for 90-plus minutes when they turn their TVs on.”

Not sure anyone needed it, but for those wanting a reminder of how England made it through to the semi-finals... enjoy!

Bronze deserves Euros success

19:23 , Matt Verri

No one has a divine right to win anything, but if there’s one England player who at least deserves the chance to play for an international trophy, then it’s Lucy Bronze, writes Reshmin Chowdhury.

Her career is littered with honours. She’s won pretty much everything: league titles, Champions Leagues, top individual accolades — and she’s done it with different clubs in different countries.

Think of the players she’s done that alongside, the people she’s learned from, the cultures she’s been exposed to, different ways of doing things, different ways of training. All those experiences have turned her into an elite athlete and it feels like this is the final piece of the jigsaw.

There’s a core of England players who have been on this journey for a long time, the likes of Ellen White, Jill Scott, Fran Kirby, Millie Bright, and you feel like they deserve something for the way they’ve pushed the game forward.

Williams: England don’t know how to lose

19:10 , Matt Verri

Former England star Fara Williams is backing England to edge through tonight in another nervy encounter.

“England looked really disjointed in the first half against Spain which was frustrating,” Williams told William Hill.

“Whether that had been a tactic or a lack of leadership on the pitch? But the good thing is England don’t know how to lose at the minute under Sarina [Wiegman], they never know when they’re beaten. It took them 120 minutes against Spain but it was worth it to see them into the semis.”

“And this could be another extra-time game for England. I think it could be 1-1 and go into extra-time again.”

England must beware of Sweden

18:43 , Matt Verri

Sweden have flown under the radar at Euro 2022, but they are confident of making their mark against England, writes Simon Collings.

England fans will be dreaming of a place in Sunday’s final at Wembley, however Sweden should not be underestimated, and this clash could be just as tense and tight as the quarter-final against Spain.

When it comes to major tournaments, Sweden have a knack of delivering. At last year’s Tokyo Olympics, they won the silver medal, and at the World Cup in 2019 they claimed a bronze, beating England in the third-fourth play-off.

The frustration for Sweden so far is that their attacking stars, such as Kosovare Asllani, Stina Blackstenius and Fridolina Rolfo, are yet to sparkle. They dismantled Portugal, but beyond that have looked turgid.

England more ruthless under Wiegman

18:22 , Matt Verri

England’s Beth Mead says head coach Sarina Wiegman has made ruthlessness “part of their DNA” as they prepare to face Sweden for a place in the final of the Women’s Euro 2022, writes Dan Kilpatrick.

The Lionesses reached 100 goals in just 18 matches under Wiegman with last week’s dramatic quarter-final win over Spain, but they will have to buck a trend at Bramall Lane tonight, having failed to get beyond the final four at their last three major tournaments.

Their record against Sweden is also poor, with just one win and one draw in six Euros games, but Wiegman masterminded victories over tonight’s opponents in Euro 2017 and the 2019 World Cup as Netherlands boss.

“I think [ruthlessness] is something Sarina’s instilled in us as a collective,” said Mead, who is the tournament’s top scorer with five goals and on course for the Golden Boot.

Where it could be won and lost

18:05 , Matt Verri

Bright’s battle with Blackstenius

England defender Mille Bright and Sweden striker Stina Blackstenius know all about each other from their battles in the WSL. The pair play for Chelsea and Arsenal respectively and there will be no love lost tonight.

Both are physical and will look to impose themselves on their opposite number. Bright has been one of England’s best players during this tournament but will have her work cut out tonight.

Rolfo hoping to finally make her mark

Fridolina Rolfo was tipped to be one of the stars of this tournament before a ball was kicked, but she has failed to deliver so far. She is a unique winger, standing 5ft 10in tall, and her combination of height and speed makes her a dangerous weapon in attack.

Lucy Bronze likes to get forward from right-back for England, but she will need to be wary about leaving space for Rolfo to exploit on the counter-attack.

How England could start...

Wiegman’s loyalty to her starting lineup will be tested tonight, but she’s not one for making changes for the sake of it.

Prediction

17:46 , Matt Verri

Another nervy night could be on the cards for the hosts but Sweden’s high press could play into the hands of a team capable of moving the ball quickly and being clinical in front of goal.

Sweden have proven to be wasteful for large periods of this tournament, scoring with their 33rd shot to beat Belgium in the quarter-finals. They will surely be punished if that continues tonight.

A 2-0 England win.

Team news

17:39 , Matt Verri

No fresh injury problems have been reported for Sarina Wiegman ahead of the game.

Therefore tactical decisions will dominate the coach’s thinking with Alex Greenwood tipped to step in for Rachel Daly at left-back. Ella Toone and Alessia Russo, who combined for the equaliser against Spain, are also pushing to start.

Sweden veteran Caroline Seger is battling a heel injury to feature having missed the last two games.

Hanna Glas, Emma Kullberg and Jonna Andersson were also absent from the quarter-finals due to Covid-19.
