A controversial World Cup in Qatar awaits an England side to have disappointed since reaching the European Championships final on home soil, although the success of Southgate’s time in charge has hardly been built on exhibitions of free-flowing football between tournaments.
Rather, England are now judged on their performances when it matters. While many will point to the rather favourable draws they’ve been given over the past four years, the team can only beat what’s in front of them, a challenge too far for previous incarnations of the national side.
Heading into Qatar off the back of a semi-final and final appearance, expectation is high, not because of recent results, but due to a strong track-record of tournament perfomance.
