England youngsters benefitting from delayed Euros to give Gareth Southgate selection headache

Next year's European Championship will inevitably be coloured by debate over the big winners and losers from the tournament's one-year postponement.

England were coming to the boil nicely back in March before the global shutdown and, for much of their stuttering autumn, it has been tempting to wonder if the delay robbed them of a timely opportunity to enter the Euros at peak form and confidence.

If nothing else, last night's meaningless 4-0 win over Iceland offered reasons to think otherwise, as Gareth Southgate's side provided a glimpse of an exciting future as they finished a difficult 2020 and frustrating Nations League campaign on a high.

Declan Rice and Phil Foden scored their first England goals and Mason Mount was also on the scoresheet in a vibrant display against an abject, 10-man Iceland.

The emergence of Foden and Jack Grealish are the most obvious reasons to think that England could yet be beneficiaries of the delayed Euros.

Neither stood a chance of making Southgate's squad last season but they dazzled at Wembley, with Grealish on course to steal the show for the third time this fortnight, only for Foden to announce himself on the international stage with two excellent late goals.

For the 20-year-old, it was a redemptive performance, brimming with confidence and banishing the memory of his disgrace in Iceland in September, when he was sent home from Reykjavik with Mason Greenwood for breaching the squad's bio-secure bubble.

With Foden already in from the cold, Greenwood likely to return next year and Grealish having quickly ended the debate about whether he merits a place in the XI – let alone the squad – England's attacking options are deeper and more varied than this time last year, when the only question was whether Marcus Rashford or Jadon Sancho would join Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane in attack.

Southgate can now call on the guile and creativity of Grealish, Foden and Mount, who opened the scoring last night, to complement the pace, trickery and directness of Sancho, Rashford and Sterling.

The growing maturity of both Mount and Rice, the childhood best friends who met in Chelsea's academy, is also a significant development and the pair will surely play a more influential role next summer than they would have done in June.

Bukayo Saka is another player to have made the breakthrough and another encouraging display surely cemented his place as one of England's left wing-backs.

The 19-year-old was involved in Mount's goal, which doubled England's lead, as well as Foden's first on an evening of tireless forays in the final third.

It was telling that his marker, right back Bikir Savarsson, was sent off early in the second half for a second bookable offence after tugging Saka's shirt.

Add in the emergence of Reece James, Kalvin Phillips and potential wildcard Jude Bellingham, as well as the fact that Kane has admitted he would not have been fully fit for the Euros in June, and England could yet be talked about as the continent's biggest winners.

After the final fixture of 2020, there are still significant questions for Southgate to answer, not least over his commitment to a 3-4-3 system, which limits the number of attacking players he can field.

The system was brought alive by Mount, Grealish and Foden last night and there is little doubt that England have more options now than they did in the summer, even if the manager is still not certain what to do with them.
