No-one likes referees but at least most people show them respect that stops short of lamping them on. Well, not in the Ethiopian Premier League.

All games in the league have been suspended after an official was chased and beaten up by Welwalo Adigrat. players for allowing a controversial goal against them for Defense.

Drawing 1-1, the Welwalo keeper fumbled the ball on the goalline after a fairly tame shot and the referee awarded a goal. Cue pandemoniam as he is surrounded by the angry players who start chasing him while the ‘goalscorer’ wheels away next to them with his shirt off.

A Welwalo coach then appears and throws the ref to the ground, while the official is tries to defend himself with the corner flag, before pushing him while all manner of people pile in to try and break it up.

The game was obviously abandoned and according to the BBS all games were banned, as there had been several instances of violence in the Ethiopian game recently.

Federation officials will meet the league’s 16 teams on Thursday.
