ENGLAND

Joe Hart: 4/10 - Early scare off a fumble and reacted poorly to Bale’s free-kick to concede a preventable opener.

Kyle Walker: 6 - Dangerous going forward, but full of error-prone defending.

Danny Rose: 5 - Passing was mostly off-key and struggled to find chemistry with the even more out-of-sorts Sterling.

Gary Cahill: 7 - Made himself known early, several good clearances and tackles, got a shot on target off a Rooney free-kick. England’s best in the back five.

Chris Smalling: 6 - A little reliant on Cahill at times but got stuck in on Bale and came close to breaking deadlock on 35mins.

Eric Dier: 7 - Calm and authoritative in defensive midfield, arguably England’s best player from the starting XI - though his attempts to create chances were always overcooked.

Dele Alli: 6 - Struggled to get involved, looked lost at times and only had a couple of promising runs forward. But, laid on Sturridge’s winner, in the face of heavy pressure in the box.

Raheem Sterling: 4 - Decent workrate tracking back but attacking was terrible and missed a sitter early on

Adam Lallana: 7 - England’s best passer of the ball, key (along with ball-winner Dier) to their dominance of possession before being withdrawn.

Wayne Rooney: 7 - Moved the ball around well and provided more scope on set-pieces than Kane did vs Russia, but was too easy to overrun in the middle and conceded the free-kick which Bale scored.

Harry Kane: 5 - Not as involved as he should have been and unable to find any space for the most part - awful free-kick attempt on 22mins summed up his day.

SUBS: Daniel Sturridge: 7 (for Sterling, 46min); Jamie Vardy: 7 (for Kane, 46min); Marcus Rashford: 6 (for Lallana, 73min)

WALES

Wayne Hennessey: 6 - Quiet first half, barring a couple of saves, but was busier in the second.

Chris Gunter: 7 - More so than official captain Williams, led the back line of five by example.

Neil Taylor: 5 - Walker and Lallana found it easy to exploit Taylor for the most part.

Ben Davies: 5 - Lucky to have not given away what was a clear penalty with an outstretched hand in the box. Had a tough day at the office.

James Chester: 7 - Strong at the back and made a few decent strides forward in the first half as Wales pushed to create breakaways.

Ashley Williams: 4 - An error-strewn performance from the skipper, despite being flanked by four others in his line and a the team sitting pretty deep overall. Perhaps England’s best player.

Joe Allen: 5 - Wales’ strategy to soak up the England pressure and pick their moments mostly rendered Allen’s style of play moot

Hal Robson-Kanu: 5 - Brought little to the game other than some old-fashioned hustle at times.

Aaron Ramsey: 7 - Involved in every aspect of the Welsh game, their busiest player and the biggest thorn in England’s side

Gareth Bale: 7 - A calm and understated display, perhaps well aware of the fact he’d be singled out by the England defence. Picked his moments, and a great free-kick exposed Hart for the opener.

Joe Ledley: 6 - Had his hands full with England enjoying most of the possession but did a good job helping to limit their chances.

SUBS: David Edwards: (for Ledley, 67min); Jonathan Williams: 5 (for Robson-Kanu, 72min).
