Euro 2016 Steve McManaman exclusive: Rashford not the answer to Hodgson's Sterling problem

Yahoo Sport's Euro 2016 expert analyser Steve McManaman insists it would be wrong to pick Marcus Rashford ahead of Raheem Sterling against Slovakia - but it would be just as wrong to include Sterling in the line up as well

Euro 2016 Steve McManaman exclusive: Rashford not the answer to Hodgson's Sterling problem

England need to resolve their issues in wide positions if they are to have a realistic chance of taking on the favourites for Euro 2016.

With Raheem Sterling woefully out of form, I can’t imagine he has any chance of playing against Slovakia on Monday and that creates a big problem for England boss Roy Hodgson.

Sterling needs someone to put an arm around him and try to help him rebuild his confidence because we all know that he can be a real threat when he is on top of his game.

All too often, he is cutting inside when he has a chance to take on his full-back and that is a sign of a young man who doesn’t believe in himself right now.

Sterling has had a tough season with Manchester City and we forget too easily that the kid is still only 21. Throwing him back into the England team just to try and give it some balance would not be the best solution for the player or Hodgson’s team in my view.

The trouble is, England don’t have too many alternative options in the wide positions and that is one reason why I suspect they will come up short if they come up against Germany, Spain or Italy later in the competition.

England looked a whole lot better when Marcus Rashford was deployed in a role on the left side of midfield in the final minutes of the Wales game, but could Hodgson really ask an 18-year-old with no international experience to start Euro 2016 games in that role? I’d say no.

There is no doubt that this England squad is loaded with talented individuals, but they are not a team just yet and that’s what Hodgson and his coaching staff have to resolve very quickly.

The one advantage England have on their side is the lack of expectation around them, both at home and to the wider audience watching Euro 2016.

No one would put England down as a contender to win the tournament after their first two matches, but that underdogs tag may suit this young squad, many of whom are not tainted by disappointments in major international competitions down the years.

I was part of England sides that felt huge pressure to deliver from during times when we were seen as strong contenders to go all the way and that is an added burden to carry when you go into these high stakes games.

At least this England side are getting a chance to find a winning formula without that weight of anticipation hanging over them, which I’m sure will be welcomed by Hodgson and his players.
