EURO 2016 TEAM PREVIEW: GROUP F - ICELAND

Tip: Early exit

Cult hero: Yep, Eidur Gudjohnsen has hung around long enough to feature in Iceland’s fairytale rise to their first major tournament. The former Bolton and Chelsea stalwart first played for Iceland in 1996 and has now scored goals for sides in eight different countries. Shame Gudni Bergsson didn’t make it.

Star player: Gylfi Sigurdsson is a class act who has been pivotal in Iceland’s progress since he made his senior debut back in 2010. An elegant playmaker who can strike a mean shot from distance, Sigurdsson excelled at Reading and Hoffenheim before Swansea came calling. Even though his Spurs spell didn’t quite work, his partnership with Aron Gunnarsson in midfield for Iceland has flourished.

Player to watch: Another midfielder who has shone recently is Birkir Bjarnason, who has doubled up with an excellent season for Swiss champions Basel where he scored 13 goals. He is eager to cover as much ground as possible to aid the cause, while he can move fluidly between the centre and left flank. He was key in the two victories over Holland in Group A that saw David defeat the imploding Goliath.

How they qualified: Three big wins on the spin started their qualifying campaign, including the famous 2-0 home victory over Holland on the back of two Sigurdsson goals. The Czechs defeated them next time out, but they got revenge in the return tie and beat Holland again to finish second in Group A.

Line-up prediction: Kristinsson, Skulason, R Sigurdsson, Arnason, Savarsson, Gudmundsson, G Sigurdsson, Gunnarsson, Bjarnason, Sigthorsson, Finnbogason
