LEWANDOWSKI KEEPS ON STRIKING

After his historic performance on Tuesday night, Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski showed a touch of mercy with FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday - scoring just the two goals within 12 minutes. He has now scored 100 goals in 168 Bundesliga games. Thanks to the Polish striker, Bayern defeat Mainz 3-0 despite the fact that Thomas Müller missed a first-half penalty. It was the first time he had missed from the spot since March, 2014. Of course, Lewandowski’s five goals within 8 minutes and 59 seconds against Wolfsburg as a substitute was still the Bundesliga´s hot topic over the weekend. Lewandowski kept a ball from that game and had it signed from all other Munich players.

DORTMUND DISPUTES AFTER EMBARRASSING DRAW

Borussia Dortmund is showing first signs of weakness after two draws within five days. The disappointing, and yet well-deserved, 1-1 draw in Hoffenheim was followed by an even more surprising 2-2 stalemate at home against newcomers Darmstadt 98 on Sunday. Darmstadt´s Marcel Heller shocked the black-and-yellow with a beautiful volley after only 17 minutes, and with an equaliser by Aytac Sulu in the last minute of the game. Dortmund´s defender Mats Hummels openly criticised the whole team for the late goal conceded, and was then was picked out for criticism himself by manager Thomas Tuchel, who said: “I do not believe that Mats excluded himself when saying that.” With the two draws, Dortmund have given Bayern Munich a four-point lead at the top of the standings.

AUBAMEYANG ANOTHER RECORD BREAKER

Although Borussia Dortmund did not win on Sunday, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is still working on another impressive Bundesliga record – one unfortunately eclipsed due to Lewandowski’s seven goals in the last two games. The Gabonese striker has now scored in all of seven of Dortmund’s Bundesliga games since the start of the season. Including last season’s games, Aubameyang has now scored in nine Bundesliga games in a row. The 26-year-old (currently 9 goals) will face a head-to-head matchup with Lewandowski (10 goals) on Sunday, when Dortmund will travel to Munich to face Bayern. He also made headlines ten days ago by stating that Munich “will not become national champions again” this season.

MANAGERLESS MOENCHENGLADBACH STARTS WINNING

Moenchengladbach can breathe more easily now after collecting their first six points this season, jumping from bottom to 14th in the table. In the 4-2 win over Augsburg on Tuesday night, Moenchengladbach scored all four goals within the first 21 minutes of the game. The team was off to another good start on the road against Stuttgart at the weekend, resulting in a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes (and ending in a 3-1 win). The winning streak came after the surprise resignation of manager Lucien Favre, who was succeeded by interim manager André Schubert. Sporting director Max Eberl stated that a new manager, similar in style to to Favre, might not be found before winter.

SCHALKE´S DELIGHT AND CONCERN

Schalke 04 have crept up to third position in the Bunesliga standings with little fuss. André Breitenreiter’s team recorded the latest of their victories on Saturday with a 1-0 win in Hamburg to continue an impressive start to the season. However, the notoriously impatient Schalke fanbase is not expecting a race for a Champions League spot, and seems to be quite satisfied with Breitenreiter’s down-to-earth-attitude, bringing unexpected calmness into a club that is often said to be the most turbulent one in Germany. However, Breitenreiter will have to do without midfielder Marco Höger, who suffered a partial tear of the cruciate ligament which might end his season.

A YOUNG VICTIM TO TACTICS

Eintracht Frankfurt 19-year-old Luca Waldschmidt should have been happy when thrown into Sunday’s game against Hertha Berlin as a 55th minute substitute. The U20 national was eclipsing his record in previous games of 16 minutes on the pitch. However, he was substituted by manager Armin Veh after 87 minutes for tactical reasons. With a 1-0 lead, the young striker was struggling to retain possession and when Hertha levelled the game after 82 minutes, Waldschmist was brought off.
