EURO BITES: Ligue 1 - PSG go 5 points clear as Ibrahimovic breaks records in Le Classique, Lacazette upset with Lyon leadership, and torrential rain halts Nice-Nantes

A round-up of the weekend action in Ligue 1 as Zlatan Ibrahimovic becomes a record breaker as he sends Paris Saint-Germain clear at the top.

PSG extended their Ligue 1 lead as Zlatan Ibrahimovic brace makes him the club’s all-time top scorer in Le Classique. Meanwhile, there is trouble brewing between Lyon and Alexandre Lacazette and a Nice-Nantes thriller had to be halted by bad weather.

PSG GO 5 POINTS CLEAR AT LIGUE 1 SUMMIT WITH MARSEILLE WIN

Paris Saint-Germain are five points clear at the top of Ligue 1 after beating fierce rivals Olympique de Marseille in Le Classique on Sunday.

Laurent Blanc’s men have now won eight consecutive games against OM, while avoiding defeat for a 10th straight time makes this Les Parisiens’ best run of form in the history of the rivalry.

Michy Batshuayi had given Les Phoceens a deserved lead after 30 minutes at Parc des Princes, but a pair of sloppily conceded penalties in the space of three first-half minutes allowed Zlatan Ibrahimovic to score twice from the spot and seal the points.

PSG goalkeeper Kevin Trapp also saved a second half penalty from former Parisien Abdelaziz Barrada.

IBRAHIMOVIC BREAKS PAIR OF RECORDS IN LE CLASSIQUE

After his penalty brace in the win over Marseille, Ibrahimovic is now PSG’s all-time top scorer with 110 goals.

Although not the most exciting or Zlatan-esque way to break legendary Portuguese striker Pauleta’s benchmark, the Swede has now done it and is full value for his record overall.

Of his 110 goals, 79 have been scored in Ligue 1 and eight have come against OM. The southerners are one of the 34-year-old’s preferred victims and Ibrahimovic is now leading scorer in the history of Le Classique.

ALL NOT WELL AT LYON WITH LACAZETTE

Although they won narrowly at home to Stade de Reims on Saturday, all is not well in the Olympique Lyonnais camp at present.

Alexandre Lacazette scored the only goal of the game at Stade Gerland, but also missed a penalty and the France international courted the headlines off the pitch last week as well.

The 24-year-old, last season’s Ligue 1 Player of the Year, told L'Equipe that he was “hurt and disappointed” the treatment he received from Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas over the summer during contract negotiations.

Lacazette also criticised coach Hubert Fournier for a lack of support in what has been a tough run of form.

ANGERS AND CAEN’S EXCELLENT STARTS TO THE SEASON CONTINUE

Now at the international break, there are two unfamiliar faces occupying positions in Ligue 1’s top four.

Newly promoted Angers SCO sit second on 18 points, while Stade Malherbe Caen are third with the same number.

Angers edged past SC Bastia 1-0 thanks to Billy Ketkeophomphone’s goal on Saturday, while an Andy Delort strike was enough to lead Caen past AS Saint-Etienne on Sunday.

DISAPPOINTING WEEK FOR LIGUE 1 IN EUROPE

It was not the best of weeks for Ligue 1 on the continent.

Despite a 3-0 win away at Shakhtar Donetsk in Group A of the UEFA Champions League, Lyon lost at home to Valencia in Group H and no other French side was able to win in the UEFA Europa League.

Girondins de Bordeaux and AS Monaco were able to take points from heir respective group games against Rubin Kazan and Tottenham Hotspur, but Saint-Etienne lost away at SS Lazio and Marseille suffered a humiliating 1-0 home defeat to FC Slovan Liberec.

NICE-NANTES ABANDONED BECAUSE OF TORRENTIAL RAIN

Southeastern France was hit by torrential rain over the weekend, killing at least 16 people because of flash flooding. Prior to PSG’s 2-1 win over Marseille on Sunday, there was one minute of applause in memory of those victims.

The weather was so bad that OGC Nice’s clash with FC Nantes at Allianz Riviera had to be abandoned at half-time with the score poised at 2-2. The picture above from Ligue 1′s official website shows just why. Goals from Jules Iloki and Adrien Thomasson sandwiched a Valere Germain brace, but the game will instead be replayed in its entirety at a later date.

Nantes’ Alejandro Bedoya provided video footage of the deluge before finding entertainment in the form of a field mouse that infiltrated the visiting team’s dressing room as the took shelter from the pouring rain.
