Group A: Arsenal

First out the hat. Has to be a good omen, Arsenal fans...

12:18 , Matt Verri

Ridiculously lengthy explanation of how the draw works.

One thing to note - match calendar, with all the specific dates and kick-off times for the group stage, will come on Saturday morning “at the latest”.

Right, here we go.

12:14 , Matt Verri

Mr Draw himself has arrived, Giorgio Marchetti.

That means only one thing - we will be getting underway very shortly. Promise.

12:12 , Matt Verri

Now there’s a throwback. Zoltan Gera onto the stage, this season’s Europa League final ambassador with it taking place in Budapest.

Discussing that run to the Europa League final with Fulham in 2010, when they were beaten by Atletico Madrid.

12:07 , Matt Verri

Just as well Rangers are in the Champions League, their fans don’t have to relive that final defeat to Frankfurt as a montage of last season is played.

This is promising. First guest onto the stage already ahead of the draw - it’s Karl-Heinz Korbel, of course. He brings the trophy onto the stage.

Korbel is still involved with Frankfurt, after almost two decades playing for the club. He was with Frankfurt for his entire career.

Here we go!

12:01 , Matt Verri

Contain your excitement if you can, the ceremony is underway in Istanbul.

The real test is how quickly the draw now starts. Anything under 20 minutes and it’s a real win.

Spain and England lead the way

11:57 , Matt Verri

Only once since 2011 has a team not from England or Spain won the Europa League. That was last season, when Eintracht Frankfurt beat Rangers in the final.

Sevilla have done a lot of heavy lifting in that stat - four times they’ve won it during that period.

Road to Budapest

11:47 , Matt Verri

Yesterday we had Yaya Toure and Hamit Altintop doing the Champions League draw. Remains to be seen who gets the honour for the Europa League.

Draw taking place in Istanbul, but the Europa League will be held in Budapest. May 31 2023. Save the date.

Fun continues...

11:42 , Matt Verri

Reminder that after this, we have the Europa Conference League later this afternoon.

West Ham the Premier League interest in that, with Hearts the Scottish representation. We’ll of course be bringing you coverage of that - the fun just never stops.

Arteta on Europa League

11:34 , Matt Verri

Mikel Arteta has been discussing the Europa League in his Arsenal press conference this morning.

“We have to try to win every competition in which we are present,” Arteta said.

“We will see what the draw brings, and begin to prepare for that as best we can.”

Time to get in the mood

11:28 , Matt Verri

Not quite the Champions League anthem is it, we have to be honest.

But it’ll do to help get the excitement going - draw coming up in 30 minutes!

How Roma qualified for Europa League

11:20 , Matt Verri

Jose Mourinho’s Roma side are in the draw, after winning last season’s Europa Conference League.

Here’s how they did it!

Arsenal set for deep run

11:12 , Matt Verri

Before last season’s absence from European football, Arsenal were in the Europa League for four seasons in a row.

One round of 32 defeat, two semi-final exits, and a heavy loss to Chelsea in the 2019 final. After such a promising start to the season from the Gunners, another deep run is expected.

Possible groups

11:04 , Matt Verri

Malmo, Freiburg, Nantes.

That would be a group Arsenal and Man United would be pretty happy with you’d imagine. Not too much travel and big favourites to win all those matches.

Real Sociedad, Sheriff, Trabzonspor... not so much!

Back in Istanbul!
