When Sam Allardyce took over at Everton they had 15 points from 14 games. 22 games later and Everton have added another 33 points to that tally, meaning that Allardyce has averaged 1.5 points per game since he started.

Last season we achieved 1.6 points per game, in Martinez’ first season we got 1.89 points per game and in Moyes’ last one we got 1.66.

Clearly the results under Allardyce haven’t been terrible, and have been good enough to pull us to safety. Getting 60 points over a league season is the minimum standard that this squad is capable of, and going by that yardstick Allardyce has been slightly below average.

There are other factors to consider though, as he did take over a mess, but also after we’d already played most of the top teams.

Results are the most important factor. If we were challenging Arsenal for 6th place then not many would be moaning.

I’d sit through dour football each week if it meant we were winning every week, but we’re clearly not. Two wins after it became clear we couldn’t qualify for Europe means very little.

More than results

So as results have been average, other factors come in to play. Allardyce has always had a smug arrogance about him that rubs people up the wrong way.

It’s not sat well with the fans of any club he has managed. What sits even worse is the type of football that he plays, even after it has long been clear that relegation wasn’t a concern.

Fans care about what type of person represents the club. You want your manager to have a certain amount of class and dignity about him. Moyes had it, and was a great manager for us. Martinez was the epitome of it, but couldn’t get the results.

Koeman didn’t really have it, but class and dignity aren’t two words that could be ever used to describe Allardyce.

He’s cringeworthy and embarrassing. Football is not just a results business either, it’s an entertainment business. Fans spend huge amounts of money on watching their team, but they don’t want to be bored.

Moyes often received unfair criticism, but his brand of football was a lot better than this. It’s horrible to watch and no-one is going to the ground excited about what they might see.

So if fans from other clubs are puzzled as to why Everton fans want him out so much with average results, they need to look at the bigger picture. Fans want to be proud of their club, and excited to go and watch them.

Allardyce is sucking the life out of the fans, and the club needs a breath of fresh air.
