Everton and Liverpool third round Carabao Cup tie dates uncertain after scheduling nightmare

Liverpool and Everton are waiting to hear when they will host their all-Premier League Carabao Cup ties as the competition has created a scheduling nightmare.

Both Merseyside clubs were given home draws in the third round, but policing and transport issues make it impossible for them to play on the same evening.

Usually, one club plays on Tuesday night, the other on Wednesday.

While Liverpool are willing to play their tie against Chelsea on either September 25 or 26, the situation is complicated for their visiting opponents, who have a televised fixture against West Ham the previous Sunday. Chelsea want the match played on Wednesday.

Everton are also in action on Sunday, September 23, against Arsenal, in a fixture screened by Sky Sports. Everton were drawn to play against Southampton at Goodison Park in the Carabao Cup.

Again, their preference is for a Wednesday night match in order to avoid playing twice in three days.

Delaying the Liverpool versus Chelsea tie by a week is not an option as both teams are competing in Europe. The Football League is aware of the congestion issue with the fixtures.

Talks have been ongoing to resolve the situation, Everton and Chelsea most affected by the outcome.
