Everton Fan View: What should Toffees do about Marco Silva?

When Ronald Koeman was sacked as the manager of Everton, the club looked at numerous options in order to replace them. The man that they looked at the most was Marco Silva, who was then the manager of Watford.

It used to be the way that football clubs let their manager’s leave if a bigger club came calling, but that’s not the case these days. Managers are becoming a lot more like players in regards to needing a big transfer fee to lure them away from their contracts. Everton apparently offered £15m to get Silva to Goodison Park, but it wasn’t enough for Watford.

Fast forward two months and everything’s changed. Everton appointed Sam Allardyce and Watford’s results went from bad to worse and it has eventually led to a point where Watford have now sacked Silva. The man that Everton were prepared to pay £15m for is now available on a free. Watford cited Everton’s interest as being the main reason for their decline in form.

It will be interesting to know the thoughts of Moshiri now that the man he most wanted is available. Allardyce did his usual steadying of the ship, but he has hardly been impressive and the football has been terrible. It was a common train of thought that Allardyce was given an 18-month contract, but will only see six months of it. There has been nothing yet to suggest that train of thought is misguided, and it’s hard to see how Moshiri will want another season of the type of football we’ve been playing.

What should Everton do now?

Of course, he could sack Allardyce now and immediately bring in Silva, but you’d say that’s extremely unlikely. More likely is that Allardyce will be sacked after the end of the season. Moshiri might be giving Silva a call to say as much. It’ll be interesting to see if Everton go back to Silva when they next come to make a managerial change.

Will the last few months have changed Moshiri’s mind however? Silva wasn’t able to turn results around and if he had his head turned, could the same apply when he’s manager of Everton? It casts more doubt about his suitability as manager of the club. If his lack of focus was a part of Watford’s poor results, then surely he lacks professionalism.

At this stage I hope Allardyce is replaced in the summer. Silva’s availability adds another twist in the story. Will Everton go back in for Silva? Who knows, but at least they won’t have to pay a huge sum of money for him after all if they do.
