Everton new boy Lucas Digne has a message for Barcelona star Yerry Mina – forget Manchester United and join him at Goodison Park.

United have stepped up their interest in Colombian Mina as they look to strengthen their defence ahead of the new Premier League season.

Everton were at one stage leading the race to sign the 23-year-old, but Mina is understood to be interested in a move to Old Trafford if the Manchester giants can meet Barcelona’s £40 million valuation.

However Digne, who has just joined Everton from Barca, would like him to think about a switch to another big club in the north-west.

“I hope to see him here but I don’t know really,” Digne told the Liverpool Echo. “He’ll choose the best for his career and we’ll see.

“I said to him to come but we’ll see. Really I don’t know. He’s a good player and a good guy.”

United are running out of time to add to their summer signings, with the transfer window closing on Thursday, a day before their Premier League campaign begins with a home match against Leicester.

Manager Jose Mourinho regularly voiced his frustration with United’s relative lack of transfer activity during their pre-season American tour.

After a fine first season, where he led United to success in the League Cup and Europa League, Mourinho fell short last term. His team were a distant second to Manchester City in the Premier League, lost the FA Cup final to Chelsea and meekly exited the European Cup at the last 16 stage to Sevilla.

For fans that saw United rule the game for a generation under Sir Alex Ferguson, it was a largely disappointing campaign. Now Mourinho will know he needs to deliver more.
