Before the 1990s, shirt numbers worn by football players generally tended to go from one through to 11. This was in the era before names on the back of shirts became a fabric of the game, and so players just interchanged shirt numbers whenever a specific player wasn't picked or was unavailable.

This is no longer the case in the modern game. Now, we have players going from one through to 99 and one wonders how long it will be before we see the first triple-digit number on the back of a shirt.

Squad numbers at Liverpool go from the number one up to 98, in the case of youngster Trey Nyoni. With players set to leave Liverpool this summer, what numbers could be available for selection before the beginning of the new season?

Numbers one to eleven are taken at present. Yet with Thiago Alcantara set to depart Anfield upon the expiration of his contract in a matter of weeks, the number six will become available. Another departure that's impending — Joel Matip — means that the number 32 will be free after eight years.

Working in numerical order, the next lowest figures available after Thiago's number six are 13, 14, 15 and 16. However, the number 12 could also soon be free, with third-choice goalkeeper Adrian's future also uncertain. Numbers 23, 25 and 27 are also free and available. 23 and 27 were worn by Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez in 2022/23, but the pair shifted down numbers last summer.

Other squad numbers that could open up this summer due to departures could be numbers 62 and 72. The former number belongs to Irishman Caoimhin Kelleher, but the 25-year-old could leave this summer in search of first-team football after years spent as back-up to Alisson.

The number 72, meanwhile, belongs to Sepp van den Berg. The Dutch central defender recently stated he wished to leave Anfield in search of regular football this summer, opening the possibility of leaving the number vacated.

Colombian winger Díaz and Mohamed Salah have both been linked with potential summer exits, meaning numbers seven and 11 could be free also, but it remains to be seen if either will leave.

Liverpool.com says: Squad numbers can be seen as a vital marketing tool, especially for younger fans who like to have their favourite player printed on the back of their shirt. Yet for Liverpool going into next season it could be a case of 'as you are', unless some big names leave and free up the most marketable numbers.
