Ex-Blues: Moxon in Championship as Pompey promoted

Owen Moxon will be playing in the Championship next season after Portsmouth won the League One title in dramatic style.

The former Carlisle United star watched from the bench as Pompey defeated Barnsley 3-2 at Fratton Park to clinch top spot.

It means Denton Holme midfielder Moxon will have progressed from part-time football in Scottish League Two to England's second tier in the space of two years.

The 26-year-old Cumbrian left his home-city club Carlisle in January to join Portsmouth's push for promotion.

He was an unused substitute in the game against Barnsley which sealed the championship for John Mousinho's side.

Late goals via a Colby Bishop penalty and Conor Shaughnessy saw Portsmouth clinch first place, after Kusini Yengi's early goal had been overturned by Devante Cole and John McAtee for the Tykes. Moxon has made 13 appearances and scored one goal for Pompey since his move from Brunton Park.

Pompey's promotion leaves Derby County, Bolton Wanderers and Peterborough United fighting it out for the second automatic promotion place in Carlisle's division.

The Blues, meanwhile, know at least four more of the sides they won't be playing on their return to League Two next term.

Mansfield Town clinched promotion from the fourth tier with a 2-1 win over Accrington Stanley.

They follow Stockport County and Wrexham in reaching League One, Stockport also wrapping up the title on Tuesday night with a 5-2 win at Notts County aided by a hat-trick from ex-Carlisle man Paddy Madden.

At the other end of League Two, Forest Green Rovers have been relegated to the National League.

Third-bottom Colchester United's 2-0 win over Grimsby Town consigned the Nailsworth club to the drop, a year after they came down from League One.

Colchester are now favourites to seal survival, four points above second-bottom Sutton United. The U's have three games to play compared with Sutton's two.

Other than Carlisle's fall back into the fourth tier, meanwhile, the remaining relegation places in League One remain to be determined with a week and a half of the season to go.
