Ex-Hornet issues cheesy challenge to BBC football presenters
Former Watford defender Ramon Vega has issued an odd – and very cheesy – challenge to BBC pundits Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer ahead of England’s Euro 24 quarter-final with Switzerland on Saturday.
The 53-year-old was capped 23 times by his country and played for both Tottenham and Celtic before a largely inglorious one-season stint at Vicarage Road during which he played 33 times for the Hornets.
Since retiring from playing, Vega has worked in the financial world and considered standing as a FIFA presidential candidate, but also undertakes some media work.
In an interview with The Mirror, Vega said he would like to be in the studio with Lineker and Shearer on Saturday, and would make them eat traditional Swiss food if they beat England.
“I would love to be in the studio with those guys, both Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, just to see their faces!” he said.
“I’ve been following their comments and what they have been saying throughout the tournament and let’s see what happens now.
“We believe we will win but I’ll bring the best Swiss cheese, the finest raclette cheese, and they can eat that when Switzerland win. I’ll happily eat fish and chips if England win - but, don’t worry, it won’t come to that!”
Vega was the first signing made by the late Gianluca Vialli when he became Watford manager in 2001, and was reportedly the highest-paid player among a very mixed band of footballing minstrels that joined the club doing that ill-fated 2001/02 campaign.
The defender played 33 times for the Hornets as they slumped to 14th in the league at the end of a season which began with Vialli proclaiming Watford could become the “Manchester United of the Championship”.
He scored three times for the club, although his only league goal came in a 3-1 defeat away at Norwich.
Vega was a regular starter in the first half of the season, but he was sent off in a 4-1 home drubbing at the hands of Millwall on New Year’s Day, and five games and two more yellow cards later he made what was to be his final appearance for Watford against Burnley at Vicarage Road on Wednesday February 6 – a game the Hornets lost 2-1.
At the end of that season, along with Vialli and nearly all his coaching staff, Vega also left Vicarage Road and went to play in French Ligue 2 for Creteil.
However, after one season there he retired from playing at the age of 33.
