Xherdan Shaqiri rolled back the years at Euro 2024 with a stunning goal that will no doubt have some Liverpool fans reminiscing.

The 32-year-old made his first start of the tournament on Wednesday as Switzerland came up against Scotland, with Shaqiri facing his old teammate Andy Robertson.

Having missed his nation’s opening win against Hungary, the winger would have been hoping to make an immediate impact and help secure his side’s passage to the knockout stages. Things didn’t start too well for the Swiss though.

After Shaqiri’s cross was headed out, Scotland broke through Robertson before Scott McTominay’s strike was deflected in by Fabian Schar. Switzerland would hit back though midway through the first-half, with Shaqiri announcing his arrival in style.

The former Liverpool star pounced on a loose backpass from Anthony Ralston, and didn’t need a second invitation to shoot as he let fire from just outside the penalty area. His left-footed effort arrowed into the top corner, leaving Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn no chance.

Shaqiri's goal means he becomes the only player to have scored in each of the last three European Championships, as well as the last three World Cups.

The two sides remained level heading into half-time, with Scotland’s place at the tournament in the balance while Switzerland look well set to advance to the knockout stages.

Shaqiri of course spent three years at Liverpool, where he was part of the side that won the Champions League and Premier League under Jurgen Klopp.

He scored eight goals in 63 appearances, including a memorable double against Manchester United, and played a starring role in the momentous 4-0 win over Barcelona at Anfield in 2019.

He left Anfield in 2021 and moved on to French side Lyon, and now represents MLS side Chicago Fire, having made the move to the US in 2022.

Liverpool.com says: That’s the Shaqiri we all know and love. He’s so capable of pulling the quite spectacular out of practically nothing.

We perhaps didn’t see quite enough of that during his time at Liverpool, although he certainly had his fair share of great moments. Good to see him rolling back the years again, although it might not be great news for Robertson.
