A former Liverpool star looks very different now as he embarks on a career in coaching. The ex-defender is now the manager of Real Madrid "Juvenil", the youth team of the Spanish giant.

That's seen him come into contact with Fernando Torres, who until recently managed the Atletico Madrid youth side. The striker has earned a promotion to the reserves, where he will look to emulate the success Xabi Alonso enjoyed at Real Sociedad B.

His reunions with Torres have not always been the most cordial. And while still at Anfield, he got into one or two disagreements as well, with Jamie Carragher once infamously grabbing him by the throat on the pitch.

Perhaps that helps explain why his spell at Liverpool as a player was a relatively short one, lasting just two and a half seasons. After that, he moved to Real Madrid, the club where he had already come through the ranks as a youngster.

In his first spell, he managed to make a couple of first team appearances, but was ultimately moved on to Deportivo La Coruna. Yet it took just six months there for Rafael Benitez to decide to snap him up for Liverpool.

His second stint at Real Madrid encompassed the best years of his career. But he did not quite retire there, instead posting a more or less unsuccessful season with West Ham United before hanging up his boots once and for all.

The mystery man: Alvaro Arbeloa

You'll have guessed who it is by now: World Cup and two-time Champions League winner Alvaro Arbeloa. Capped 56 times for Spain, the decorated full-back is now the youth team manager at his beloved Real Madrid.

Now 44, he understandably looks very different. Gone is the buzzcut with which he arrived at Anfield, with thick jet-black hair in its place, and the beard has been allowed to grow as well.

Those clashes with Torres truly have been tense. They once came to blows on the touchline, before ignoring each other the next time the two sides met.

But Carragher has taken full responsibility for the infamous incident against West Brom. He recounted what happened on the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet.

"We were playing West Brom away [and] he was a solid full back. He just kept going, I wasn’t getting the protection," Carragher explained. The game was already won to be fair, I’m thinking, "We’ve got to get our clean sheet" and he’s almost playing like a right winger, and they’re attacking.

"I’ve just been like a lunatic, and I grabbed him [by the throat] and [Xabi] Alonso’s come over, and everyone. We got in the dressing room afterwards and he was having none of it. He was decent – he ended up winning the World Cup!"

Liverpool.com says: High tensions seem to be following Arbeloa around! But he was certainly a very good player, and Liverpool would no doubt have liked him to stay longer.

If he can enjoy half as much success as a coach with Real Madrid as he did as a player, then the youth side is destined for big things. Liverpool will no doubt watch yet another of its former players in management with some interest.
