Ex-Swindon Town midfielder Timi Max Elsnik has moved one step closer to appearing at the UEFA European Championship after being selected in the provisional squad for Slovenia.

Euro 2024 will be hosted in Germany this summer and Swindon could have some representation at the tournament as the former loanee has been included in Matjaz Kek’s 30-man training camp squad.

If selected for the final squad, Elsnik would be playing against England this summer as they are in Group C against the runners-up from three years ago, as well as Denmark and Serbia.

The 26-year-old has won 13 caps for his country after making his debut in 2021, scoring against Portugal in his last cap and having played in every game in the last two years, including captaining Slovenia against the United States earlier this year.

Elsnik spent one season with Swindon on loan from Derby County, making 25 appearances and scoring five goals across all competitions, including braces against Dartford in the FA Cup and Crewe Alexandra in the league.

Slovenia will be playing in their second Euros this summer, having previously qualified for Euro 2000, and their squad includes the likes of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak and RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.
