Former Ipswich Town Jeremy Sarmiento started for Ecuador in their 0-0 draw against Mexico last night, helping them reach the knockout stages.

The winger scored La Tri's opening goal of the tournament against Venezuela last month, although they were beaten 2-1. However, they followed it up with a 3-1 win against Jamaica, which put them in second place heading into the final game of Group B.

Sitting above Mexico on goal difference, Ecuador knew that a draw would be enough to guide them through to the quarter-finals. Despite some nervy moments, they were able to achieve that, with the game finishing goalless.

Sarmiento started and played 76 minutes before being withdrawn for Angel Mena.

The result sets up a huge tie against World Cup holders Argentina, who topped Group A with three wins from three. They're yet to concede a goal in the tournament.

It could see Sarmiento square up against FC Barcelona legend Lionel Messi, who was rested against Peru after playing the full 90 minutes against Canada and Chile.

The two sides have met fairly recently, however, with Argentina sealing a 1-0 win in a friendly match that took place on June 10th - just before the start of the season.

The match will take place at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, on Friday, July 5th (2am BST). The winner will progress to face Venezuela or Canada in the semi-finals next week.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Sarmiento confirmed that he was waiting to talk to new Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler, but that he is due back for pre-season training in East Sussex when Ecuador's campaign comes to an end.

His father, Leonel, has since revealed that, while his preference is to remain at Brighton, the 22-year-old also has interest from Spain and Germany.
