Among the Marvel superhero character's who have dominated our screens over the years, few women have had the pleasure of being cast in a leading role - that is when you compare the amount of male actors who lead the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

While Scarlett Johansson has seen success starring as Russian spy Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) in the Marvel franchise, and featured in her own standalone film last year, few female actors have been given the chance to represent the MCU (a franchise which boasts 27 blockbusters, we might add) on their own.

Fortunately, things are changing for the better.

Dakota Johnson, whose early career involved starring in the Fifty Shades trilogy alongside Jamie Dornan, and who recently starred in the Oscar-nominated psychological thriller The Lost Daughter, is reportedly in talks to play a superhero in Marvel's next instalment, Madame Web.

If the rumours are true, Johnson would join fellow female actors Johansson, Elisabeth Olsen and Zoe Saldana (MCU's Wanda Maximoff and Gamora, respectively) in the comic book film franchise, and we for one can't wait to see more powerful women take the helm of superhero action.

Here's everything you need to know about Dakota Johnson's rumoured role in Madame Web:

Who stars in Madame Web?

According to Deadline, Johnson is understood to be in talks to play the lead role of Madame Web. Meanwhile, S.J. Clarkson - who's worked on Succession, Orange is the New Black and Anatomy of a Scandal - is believed to be directing the project.

Screenwriters Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have also been tipped to write the screenplay, after writer and director Kerem Sanga worked on the initial draft.

What's the Madame Web plot?

In the comic books, Madame Web is portrayed as an elderly woman with myasthenia gravis, which is a rare long-term condition that causes muscle weakness according to the NHS. As a result the character is put on a life support machine evocative of a spider web, per Deadline.

Madame Web never physically fought any villains in the books, due to her age and medical condition, which has led sources to believe the plan for film adaptation of the story could entail a different narrative and destiny for her character.

Madame Web has been likened to Marvel's version of Doctor Strange due to the character's physic sensory capabilities.

What has Dakota Johnson said about Madame Web?

In early February Johnson shared a picture of a Deadline article about her rumoured role in the film with a spiderweb emoji in the caption.
