F1 Brazilian Grand Prix LIVE: George Russell wins for first time in F1 with Lewis Hamilton second

George Russell took his first Formula One Grand Prix victory to end a season-long blank for Mercedes in a one-two finish with seven times world champion Lewis Hamilton in Brazil.

Russell led from the start at Sao Paulo’s Interlagos circuit after winning Saturday’s 100km sprint, a race that determined Sunday’s starting grid, to end a run of nine wins in a row by champions Red Bull.

In a lively race with two safety car periods, honorary Brazilian Hamilton overcame an early collision with Red Bull’s double world champion Max Verstappen to race back to the podium in front of a cheering crowd. Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz finished third, with team mate Charles Leclerc fourth.

“What an amazing feeling,” said an emotional Russell. “A huge thank you to the whole team for making it possible. It has been an emotional rollercoaster this season. Lewis was super fast and when I saw the safety car come out, I thought, ‘Jesus, this is going to be a really difficult end’. But I am really happy to take the victory. I am speechless.”

‘You know how it is with Max’: Lewis Hamilton reacts after collision with Verstappen in Brazil

Sunday 13 November 2022 22:25 , Kieran Jackson

Max Verstappen said he would not hesitate to collide with Lewis Hamilton again after the rivals crashed at Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix.

Hamilton and Verstappen tangled following a safety car restart on the seventh lap in Interlagos as they duelled for second place through the Senna Esses.

Hamilton recovered to finish runner-up – behind team-mate George Russell who took his maiden win – while Verstappen, who was forced to stop for repairs in his Red Bull, finished sixth.

The double world champion - who disobeyed team orders late on and opted not to let Sergio Perez overtake him was deemed at fault for the collision by the stewards and hit with a five-second penalty.

After the race, Hamilton, who was involved in a number of altercations with Verstappen during last season’s toxic title battle, said: “What can I say? You know how it is with Max.”

Verstappen responded: “I was not upset by the penalty, but if you ask me would I do it again? Absolutely.

“I went round the outside in turn one, and I just felt it as soon as I was going next to him that he had no intention to leave me space, and I was like, ‘Okay if you are not going to leave me space then we will just collide’.”

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: George Russell reduced to tears after maiden F1 grand prix triumph in Brazil

Sunday 13 November 2022 22:17 , Kieran Jackson

An emotional George Russell was reduced to tears after he held off Lewis Hamilton to claim the maiden win of his Formula One career at Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix.

Pole-sitter Russell delivered an electric start at Interlagos before expertly surviving a late safety car to follow in the footsteps of Hamilton, Jenson Button and David Coulthard and become only the fourth British winner of a grand prix this century.

Russell’s supreme performance – 24 hours after he triumphed in Saturday’s sprint race – followed another collision between Hamilton and Max Verstappen, with the latter penalised by the stewards.

But the day belonged to Russell, who in his 81st start, fourth season, and first alongside Hamilton at Mercedes, delivered the Silver Arrows’ opening win of a turbulent season. Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc finished third and fourth for Ferrari, with Verstappen sixth.

“I need some tissues,” the 24-year-old Russell said from inside his crash helmet, seconds after the chequered flag fell. “I am crying, boys and girls.” Later, he added: “I was pretty impressed by how quickly I started crying. By Turn 2, I was in floods of tears.”

Russell was twice denied a brilliant victory – first through a Mercedes pit-stop mistake and then a puncture – as a remarkable stand-in for a coronavirus-hit Hamilton at the Sakhir Grand Prix almost two years ago.

Here, he looked on course to cruise to the flag only for countryman Lando Norris to throw a spanner in the works when he broke down in his McLaren on lap 55. The safety car was sent out with Norris’ machine in a perilous position.

“So what are we doing?” asked Russell, with Hamilton, who had bounced back from eighth, following his coming together with Verstappen, to second, and now suddenly lurking in his team-mate’s mirrors.

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: Max Verstappen disobeys Red Bull team orders with Sergio Perez fuming at Brazilian Grand Prix

Sunday 13 November 2022 21:52 , Kieran Jackson

Max Verstappen insisted he “has his reasons” after disobeying team orders from the Red Bull pit wall to allow Sergio Perez to pass him on the final lap of Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix.

The double world champion, who had overtaken a struggling Perez towards the end of a chaotic race, was told to let the Mexican through to claim fifth place, with Perez battling with Charles Leclerc for second place in the World Championship.

Yet Verstappen ignored the instruction from race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase, meaning Perez goes into the final race next week in Abu Dhabi level on points with Leclerc, instead of in front.

When asked by Lambiase why he didn’t let his team-mate through, Verstappen bluntly said over team radio: “I told you already last time. You guys don’t ask that again to me. OK, are we clear about that? I gave my reasons and I stand by it.”

Perez, who memorably defended superbly against Lewis Hamilton to help Verstappen in Abu Dhabi last year, blasted the Dutchman.

“Thank you for that guys, thank you,” he said. “He shows who he really is.” After a fiery team meeting shortly after the conclusion of the race, Verstappen refused to divulge what his reasoning was for not helping out his team-mate.

“We discuss these things internally. The drivers have spoken about it, they’re very clear. For us, Checo is now tied on points with Charles. Ferrari didn’t swap their cars round.

“I’m not going to go in what we discuss behind closed doors. The drivers discussed it, shook hands.

“We work as a team, our priority is to get Checo runner-up in the Championship. It’s a straight fight between Checo and Charles.

Checo’s done a phenomenal job all year, he deserves that second place. We’ll do our best to support that. We discuss it behind closed doors, we’ll discuss it as a larger group in the debrief later. The bigger discussion is why were we missing the pace today.”

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: Max Verstappen...

Sunday 13 November 2022 20:58 , Kieran Jackson

“It was a good move to go round the outside, he had no intention to give me space and I had no intention to back out. We were slow anyway, there was not a lot we could have done.

“I have my reasons for that, we just talked about it. Just move forward from here, if we go to Abu Dhabi, if he needs the help I’ll be there. Basically cleared everything as to why I didn’t do it.”

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton...

Sunday 13 November 2022 20:52 , Kieran Jackson

“I feel really good. We’ve worked so hard this year, to be fighting for front row and get a one-two, I’m elated for the whole team.

“Who knows! We didn’t expect to be as quick as this weekend, it’s incredible to turn around. Nevrr giving up, huge congratulations to George - a wonderful win for him.”

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: George Russell...

Sunday 13 November 2022 20:45 , Kieran Jackson

“Incredibly emotional. It’s been such a journey me and my family have been on, then Williams the highs and lows. The struggles at Mercedes at the start of the season, the recent races for me have been challenging. To get through that race, when you have Lewis there for 12 laps. I knew how fast he was! I was driving the race of my life! So happy!

“Just believing in myself. I feel so fortunate to be alongside Lewis, he’s really pushing me. Not a lot more to say! I’ve got a group chat with my whole family, had them on the phone - just been on this journey together. Proper team effort, this is for all of them.

“I always knew that when the opportunity to arise, we’d be there to take it. Not just me for the team. The three years at Williams were difficult, especially when I had the likes of Lando and Alex performing. I’m rambling away!”

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: Max Verstappen...

Sunday 13 November 2022 20:40 , Kieran Jackson

On disobeying team orders: “That’s why I first went to speak to the team, I gave my reasons. I’m not going to say why, it’s more important as a team that we put everything on the table and we move forwards. If there’s a chance to help him I will.

“I understand why he is disappointed but they also have to understand my reasons. I’m not going to say. Everything understood it, we are professional enough to move forward.

On Hamilton incident: “I just went for it, he didn’t leave me space, I knew we were going to come together. We were way too slow, I thought we could race quite well together but clearly the intention was not there.”

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: RACE REPORT!

Sunday 13 November 2022 20:38 , Kieran Jackson

George Russell claimed the first win of his Formula One career as Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen collided at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Pole-sitter Russell delivered an electric start at Interlagos before expertly surviving a late safety car as Mercedes finally got off the mark at the penultimate round of the season.

The 24-year-old follows in the footsteps of Hamilton, Jenson Button and David Coulthard to become only the fourth British winner of a Grand Prix this century. Russell’s supreme performance, 24 hours after he triumphed in Saturday’s sprint race, followed another altercation between Hamilton and Verstappen.

Hamilton recovered from the collision to take second - unable to challenge Russell in an 11-lap dash to the flag - while Verstappen, forced to stop for repairs, and then hit with a five-second penalty by the stewards, finished sixth. Carlos Sainz took third for Ferrari ahead of team-mate Charles Leclerc.

Russell and Hamilton shared the front row at Interlagos, but it was the younger Briton who delivered the better getaway.

“Feeling good, very tricky to know what the right startegy will be. Meidums didn’t work for Red Bull yesterday but we’ll all have to run it! It doesn’t matter what straegy we’re on, but we showed we have the pace so we’ll just be driving as fast as possible!”

“This is going to be tough today, a lot hotter than yesterday. The plan is for Checo to be ahead of Charles, so we go to Abu Dhabi in the best position. It’s more likely team orders come to play in Abu Dhabi over here.

“These tyres are so sensitive. We were on a different compound yesterday and it didn’t play out as expected.”

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: Timo Glock reveals what really happened with Lewis Hamilton on infamous final lap in 2008

Sunday 13 November 2022 17:29 , Kieran Jackson

Timo Glock has denied long-standing claims that he let Lewis Hamilton overtake him on the final lap of the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2008, allowing the Briton to win his first Formula 1 title.

Hamilton passed Glock during the final few corners of the last race of the season to finish fifth at Interlagos, denying race-winner and home driver Felipe Massa the title by a single point.

“There are still people out there that think I did it on purpose,” Glock told Sky Sports at this season’s Brazilian GP last weekend, per Planet F1.

“I was reading comments [where] people say: ‘Ah, it’s really interesting to see how you explain to Felipe that you left the door open like this and you didn’t fight against Lewis.’ I got to the airport when I left Brazil, I had a police escort to the airport. I got even letters sent to my family back home, to my parents, which were really [over] the limit.”

German Glock said his gamble not to stop for intermediate tyres did not pay off, particularly as there was no chance to pit later to rectify the mistake – because the pit lane was full of people celebrating while thinking Massa had secured the title for Ferrari in his home country.

“At some point I said [via the team radio]: ‘Guys, I don’t think we will survive these last two laps.’ Anyway, there was no chance to come in anymore, because there was already the whole preparation going on for the podium ceremony; everyone freaked out because he [Massa] in that moment actually was world champion.

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: Sprint race report!

Sunday 13 November 2022 17:23 , Kieran Jackson

George Russell brilliantly fought his way past Max Verstappen to take the first win of his Formula One career in Saturday’s sprint race to claim pole position for the Brazilian Grand Prix. Russell hounded Verstappen for a number of thrilling laps at Interlagos before making his move stick between Turns 3 and 4 to triumph for Mercedes.

The 24-year-old British driver kept his composure to take the chequered flag 3.9 seconds clear of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, with Lewis Hamilton passing Verstappen on lap 20 to take third. Pole-sitter Kevin Magnussen took the chequered flag in eighth.

Magnussen sprung the shock of the season when he claimed the first pole of his career in Friday night’s rain-affected qualifying.

But the 30-year-old Dane’s dreams of following up his maiden pole with his first win were over on the start of lap three when Verstappen cruised past him on the run down to Turn 1.

Verstappen was one of only two drivers to start the race on the slower, but more durable medium tyres. However, the peculiar move totally backfired on the double world champion with Russell, on the soft rubber, the speedier man.

By lap 12, Russell was crawling all over the back of Verstappen’s Red Bull and the Mercedes driver looked to have got the job done on the run down to Turn 4, only for Verstappen to hold firm.

The following lap, Russell tried his luck again but Verstappen defended for his life to cling on to the lead. But his defence ended two laps later when Russell got the better exit out of the sweeping left-hander third bend to accelerate ahead of Verstappen for the lead.

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: FEATURE - From jeers to one of their own: How Brazil took Lewis Hamilton to their hearts

Sunday 13 November 2022 16:59 , Kieran Jackson

“I feel like now I’m one of you,” beamed a bright and blue Lewis Hamilton, radiating unparalleled pride as he received his Brazilian citizenship in the nation’s capital this week. A tale which started with World Championship agony at Interlagos as a rookie 15 years ago – followed by boos from the grandstands 12 months on as he snatched glory from Felipe Massa’s grasp – has come full circle in something akin to fairytale fashion.

Now idolised and adored, the seven-time world champion – born and bred in Stevenage, 30 miles north of London, lest we forget – has taken Brazil to his heart but, of greater gravity, is how the country has taken Hamilton to their heart. Because, quite frankly, this fondness for Britain’s greatest racing driver was as intangible as it was improbable at the start of his Formula 1 career.

On Hamilton’s first F1 visit to the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in 2007, an unprecedented debut title triumph was cruelly taken away from him, with a gearbox issue demoting his stricken McLaren to the back of the field. Instead, to the jubilation of Ferrari fans – supporting the Scuderia, represented by Brazilian star Massa – Kimi Raikkonen denied both Hamilton and team-mate Fernando Alonso amid a year of scandal and controversy.

Roll on to 2008 and the equation was much the same heading into the final race: Hamilton’s Championship was in his hands, with a fifth-place finish all that was required. Massa, as Brazil yearned for a first world champion in 17 years, was his closest challenger.

Only there was more to it than simple on-track mathematics. Hamilton had been subject of vitriolic racial abuse throughout the season, from the stands in Barcelona pre-season testing to language on a Spanish fan website in the week leading up to the season finale. At a sponsor’s function mere days before his crowning moment, Hamilton was handed a toy black cat – a symbol of bad luck in Brazil.

Perhaps it was all too fitting then that, come the conclusion on that fateful Sunday, luck was raining down in literal terms on the then 23-year-old. In need of making up a place approaching the final corner, Timo Glock slowed in damp conditions and… you know the rest. Ecstasy turned to agony at Ferrari and among the home fans, who needed no invitation to jeer the Brit as he hurriedly left the cockpit to celebrate.

From then on Hamilton’s relationship with Massa, and subsequently Brazil, showed no signs of improvement. Collisions and media pen confrontations followed. Tension always seemed to be brewing in the background as both men saw Championships come and go amid Sebastian Vettel’s era of dominance.

So, what was the turning point? Perhaps 2016, as Hamilton drove supremely in the wet to taste victory for the first time at Interlagos at the tenth time of asking, whilst wearing a tribute helmet to his hero and a Brazilian icon of the ages, Ayrton Senna.

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: Lando Norris reveals Red Bull talks before signing McLaren deal

Sunday 13 November 2022 16:41 , Kieran Jackson

Lando Norris has revealed he held talks with Red Bull prior to signing a new long-term contract with McLaren in February. The 22-year-old, who made his F1 debut for McLaren back in 2019, penned a new four-year deal until the end of the 2025 season before the 2022 campaign started.

McLaren have struggled to match the speed of Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes this season though, yet Norris is the best of the rest and currently positioned seventh in the Driver Standings.

But before the weekend’s Mexican Grand Prix, Norris divulged that he had indeed spoken to Christian Horner’s team before signing his extension, as well as “a few other people.”

“It’s more just I was coming to the end of my contract, and it wasn’t like we (Red Bull and I) were talking heavily,” Norris said.

“I literally said, it was just, everyone always tries to speak to all teams at some point, so I spoke to them, I spoke to a few other people. A chat’s a chat, it’s not like, ‘what we can do straight away?’ Just keeping in touch, things like that, it’s as simple as that sometimes.

“It was just coming to the end of the contract, you see what options are available, you just kind of find out what’s possible, what might be possible over the next few years.”

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: FIA boss Mohammed ben Sulayem hits out at ‘sustained toxicity’ on social media

Sunday 13 November 2022 16:24 , Kieran Jackson

FIA president Mohammed ben Sulayem has joined Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in condemning the “sustained toxicity” on social media platforms.

Seven-time world champion Hamilton said last week that “we should all come off social media” as it was becoming more and more toxic.

The Briton was speaking following Max Verstappen and the Red Bull team’s Sky boycott at the Mexican Grand Prix, which came a week after pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz said Hamilton was “robbed” of an eighth world championship at last year’s much-debated season finale in Abu Dhabi.

Confronting the issue after claiming victory in Mexico, Verstappen said: “You cannot live in the past and you have to move on. Social media is a very toxic place and if you are constantly being like that live on TV then you are making it worse instead of trying to make it better.”

Former race director Michael Masi said he received death threats following his decision to let lapped cars pass the safety car on the final lap in Abu Dhabi, meaning Verstappen had a clear run at Hamilton on much faster tyres.

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: Toto Wolff reveals when Lewis Hamilton will extend his Mercedes deal

Sunday 13 November 2022 16:15 , Kieran Jackson

Lewis Hamilton will extend his contract at Mercedes in a “quiet time over winter”, says team boss Toto Wolff.

The seven-time world champion’s current deal with the Silver Arrows - a team he has been with since leaving McLaren ahead of the 2013 season - expires at the end of the 2023 campaign.

The 37-year-old, despite his numerous interests outside of racing, has been vocal about lengthening his stay in Formula 1 and Wolff revealed after the Mexican Grand Prix that fresh terms will be agreed after the 2022 season concludes in Abu Dhabi in two weeks’ time.

“We haven’t started having talks, we want to definitely finish the season and then find some quiet time over the winter like we have done last time around, that literally started in the winter holidays and lasted over two months,” Wolff said.

“We haven’t done that. But he’s much more than a driver to us now. Although we’re not talking about a career end, it’s also important to speak about his role as an ambassador for Mercedes and the many sponsors that we have, and the implication he can have in our wider audience.”

F1 Brazilian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton targets ‘dream’ win in Brazil as Mercedes lock out front row

Sunday 13 November 2022 15:44 , Kieran Jackson

Lewis Hamilton set himself the target of completing his “greatest dream” by winning Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix.

George Russell will start the penultimate race of the season from pole position after he claimed the first Formula One victory of his career in Saturday’s frenetic 24-lap dash in Interlagos.

But Hamilton joins his Mercedes team-mate on the front row after he drove from eighth to third, and then took advantage of second-placed Carlos Sainz’s grid penalty for an engine change. Hamilton, who earlier this week became an honorary citizen of Brazil, was roared on by the Sao Paulo crowd as he charged through the field.

And the seven-time world champion said: “This has been a very humbling week for me. I have been so warmly welcomed. My parents have messaged me, and they are so grateful to everyone in Brazil for the love they have given their kid.

“For sure, it is the greatest dream to get a win here. But it will be tough to race George tomorrow. Hopefully we will have a bit of a battle and take a one-two for the team.”

Hamilton, 37, embraced Russell as the Mercedes pair celebrated their finest afternoon of a turbulent campaign. Russell will be seeking to earn his first Grand Prix triumph on Sunday, while a victory for Hamilton would keep his unique record of winning a race in every season of his career alive.
