F1 British Grand Prix result LIVE: Carlos Sainz wins as Lewis Hamilton makes podium at Silverstone

Carlos Sainz won a wild and wacky British Grand Prix which saw Zhou Guanyu survive a horror opening-lap crash and protestors invade the track at Silverstone.

Sainz fought his way past Ferrari team-mate Charles Leclerc in a brilliant 10-lap shootout to the chequered flag following a safety car period to claim his maiden Formula One win. Sergio Perez finished second, with Lewis Hamilton third after he forced his way around Leclerc with four laps of the 52 laps remaining.

Sainz, Perez and Hamilton all took on fresh tyres ahead of the safety car re-start, but Ferrari left Leclerc out on old rubber and the championship challenger was left in no man’s land, dropping from first to fourth, and dealing his title hopes a blow on a day where Max Verstappen limped home in seventh after he sustained a puncture and damage to his Red Bull bodywork. A record crowd of 142,000 fans in Northamptonshire were treated to the race of the season which started in extraordinary fashion.

Rookie Zhou was approaching the 160mph opening Abbey corner when British driver George Russell tagged the right rear of the Chinese driver’ machine, sending him on to his roof and sliding out of control. Upside down, Zhou continued through the gravel at high speed with sparks flying before he slammed into the tyre barrier and was launched into the fencing. Fans and photographers ducked for cover with Zhou’s Alfa Romeo lodged on its side, between the tyre wall and the fencing.

An extraction team rushed to Zhou and the 23-year-old, in just his 10th race, was carefully removed and taken away in an ambulance to the medical centre before being discharged. Russell was also seen dashing to check on his friend, the Williams driver Alex Albon, who was caught up in the accident, and then Zhou’s condition. “I’m glad to see Zhou okay. It was an horrific incident,” Russell told Sky Sports. The Mercedes driver, who was not permitted to restart the race, added: “I jumped out of the car to see that Zhou was OK. When I got back to car I couldn’t restart it. As soon as you get outside assistance you cannot restart the race.”

The top-3 on Zhou’s accident:

Sunday 3 July 2022 18:39 , Kieran Jackson

Sainz: “I made the decision not to watch the accident at the time. When I watched it at the podium, I was shocked. It was crazy. If you see the crash in F2 this morning too, the halo has probably saved two lives.”

Perez: “Very pleased that they’ll be racing again. I was in the garage when I saw the accident and I was shocked, it’s been a while since we saw an accident like that. There’s always lessons, to learn from today, things we can improve.

“One more thing I’d like to say is with salary caps, we are the ones puttnig on the show, we should stop talking about this.”

Sainz: “I thought the red flag was for the protestors, I had three people running towards me.”

Hamilton: “I don’t have much to add from those two, answered very well. And I don’t know about the protestors...”

Carlos Sainz:

Sunday 3 July 2022 18:33 , Kieran Jackson

“The first win is always a bit of a relief I’m not going to lie. Because there you have it, a win in Formula 1.

“Honestly I never stopped believing that this win was going to come. It was about time that something happened in a race that I can win - keep believing. Things have never come easy to me in my career...”

Lewis Hamilton in the post-race press conference:

Sunday 3 July 2022 18:29 , Kieran Jackson

“Those last few laps were reminiscent of the karting days.

“We got the quickest lap at the end which we haven’t been able to do. The race-pace has improved, it’s definitely helped us get a little bit closer - but not in a position to win just yet I don’t think.

“If we didn’t have a safety car, I think I’d have been able to fight these two {Sainz and Perez] but it wasn’t meant to be.”

Carlos Sainz lauds ‘special’ Silverstone after claiming first-ever F1 Grand Prix victory

Sunday 3 July 2022 17:56 , Kieran Jackson

Carlos Sainz made clear his delight and gratitude after winning Sunday’s British Grand Prix, a first triumph for the Spaniard on the Formula One circuit in what was his 150th race start.

The Ferrari man was on pole position at Silverstone, though his lead initially lasted only seconds as Max Verstappen bypassed him heading into turn one - but a huge crash behind them meant a restart from the original positions.

Even then, an exhilarating race provided so many twists and turns that both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton also led at different stages, before a Safety Car came out in the closing stages which proved pivotal.

Sainz, Hamilton and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez all immediately pitted to change to soft tyres while then-leader Leclerc was left on hard compounds, with the bunched-up group then producing a thrilling finale which saw Perez take second and Hamilton third.

It was Sainz who triumphed though, and noted the “special” role Silverstone had played in his career to date in a celebratory post-race speech.

‘Halo saved me’: Zhou Guanyu reacts after surviving ‘horrific’ Silverstone crash

Sunday 3 July 2022 17:52 , Kieran Jackson

Zhou Guanyu admits the halo “saved him” after a “horrific” crash during the opening-lap crash at the British Grand Prix.

The Alfa Romeo driver’s car flipped upside down and jammed into the catch fencing in front of thousands of shocked fans.

The F1 rookie crashed while approaching 160mph at the Abbey corner when George Russell made contact with the rear of Zhou’s car, which saw him launch onto his roof and slide out of control.

After Zhou continued through the gravel and came to a thudding halt at the tyre barrier, Alfa Romeo confirmed the driver was “conscious” and “talkative” following medical treatment.

And the Chinese driver sent a message to his fans on social media: “I’m ok, all clear. Halo saved me today. Thanks everyone for your kind messages!”

George Russell, speaking to Sky Sports:

Sunday 3 July 2022 15:53 , Kieran Jackson

“Glad to hear Zhou is doing OK, a horrific incident. There was no grip on the hardest compound, I got swamped by many cars, I got touched and touched Zhou and that was it.”

“I got out of the car to see if Zhou was OK... apparently as soon as you get assitance [his car was put on the back of a truck], you can’t restart. It’s very frustrating as the car just had a puncture and we had the pace to get back to sixth.

“We’re trying [to appeal]. It’s one of those unique circumstances...”

Sunday 3 July 2022 15:30 , Kieran Jackson

Blimey.

Just seen a replay in the media centre of the crash.

Russell squeezes Gasly which causes a slight touch - Russell clips Zhou, flinging the Alfa Romeo upside down towards the barrier before the Chinese driver’s car spins back round and up, into the fence above the tyre barrier.

Meanwhile, a secondary incident behind them saw numerous collisions. Bumper cars frankly.

RED FLAG

George Russell having a word with an FIA official. It’s a bit unclear, but I believe he’s asking why he can’t rejoin the race. The Mercedes driver was in the gravel before he got out of the car and raced across towards Zhou’s car.

Logan Sargeant is first American to win Formula Two race

Sunday 3 July 2022 13:38 , Jack Rathborn

Logan Sargeant became the first driver from the United States to win a Formula Two race when he held off a challenge from Theo Pourchaire to claim victory at the British Grand Prix on Sunday.

Sargeant, a member of the Williams Formula One team driver academy, started from pole for the first time and controlled the race from the front, keeping his cool under pressure from Frenchman Pourchaire.

“What a weekend for me and (team) Carlin for that matter, first pole position, first feature race win – couldn’t be happier to be honest,” said Sargeant. “The car was absolutely hooked up and just looking forward to hopefully doing this more regularly.”

Brazilian Felipe Drugovich continues to lead the drivers championship with 148 points followed by Pourchaire on 106. Sargeant moved into third on 88.

While Sargeant’s victory was the first by an American in the rebranded Formula Two, his compatriot Alexander Rossi, who now drives in IndyCar, won in Abu Dhabi in 2013 in what was then the GP2 series.

The incident-filled raced had several cautions but the most serious was on lap two when Roy Nissany went wide off the track and shot directly back onto the circuit into the path of Dennis Hauger.

The Norwegian driver’s car flew into the air and on top of Nissany before coming to a stop in the gravel, with the halo device keeping the Israeli safe.
