FA Cup: Glory for non-League Sutton United and Lincoln, as Burnley and Crystal Palace advance

It was a famous night for National League sides Lincoln City and Sutton United, who both recorded FA Cup third round replay upsets to advance into the fourth round.

They will be joined by Crystal Palace, who battled past League One Bolton Wanderers, and Burnley who won the only all-Premier League affair against Sunderland.

Non-League Lincoln City honoured the memory of former manager Graham Taylor, who died last week, with a famous win over Championship Ipswich Town.

Nathan Arnold’s last-gasp strike secured a thoroughly deserved victory at a packed Sincil Bank and sends the Imps into the fourth round for the first time in 41 years. Their reward is to host Championship high-flyers Brighton and Hove Albion on January 28.

Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy was furious with his team, and when asked if he was embarrassed replied, “Too right I am.

“We shouldn’t get beaten by a National League side, whether they are top of the league or not. Yes, absolutely, I am embarrassed.

“If there had only been nine and a half thousand seen my embarrassment instead of how many million it would have been better.”

Lincoln manager Danny Cowley was understandably over the moon.

“The way they’ve worked day in, day out, is incredible. You can have great days like this if you put so much work in like we have.

“What a brilliant finish from Nathan. Not an easy finish when the whole of Sincil Bank is hoping he sticks it in. It’s a great night and an amazing feeling for the club.”

They weren’t the only National League team to record a famous win, as Sutton United added a 3-1 victory over local rivals Wimbledon to go with their famous win over Coventry 20 years ago.

Sutton will host Leeds United in just under a fortnight’s time, after three goals in the final minutes saw them home against the Dons and sparked wild scenes at the final whistle.

Wimbledon had made the perfect start when Tom Elliott rose above the defence to head them ahead in the 10th minute, but they had Paul Robinson sent off just five minutes later.

However, Sutton struggled to break their hosts down until Roarie Deacon’s stunner levelled the scores before late goals from Maxime Biamou and Dean Fitchett caused the upset.

Sutton manager Paul Doswell spoke of his joy of the club’s win – and can’t wait for Leeds to come to Gander Green Lane.

“I’m so pleased for my chairman, our directors who are all volunteers, for the 1,000 fans here and for the players.

“Without being over-emotional about it, we have got a good chance against Leeds on our pitch. No one likes playing on it apart from us it seems. If they make seven or eight changes against us I think we will have a chance.”

Also in south London, Crystal Palace needed two second-half goals from £30m substitute Christian Benteke to get past Bolton Wanderers 2-1, while Burnley won the all-Premier League match against Sunderland 2-0, thanks to goals from Sam Vokes and Andre Gray.

Palace will play Manchester City at Selhurst Park in the fourth round.

There was also drama as League Two Blackpool’s Bright Samuel scored in injury time of the second period of extra time to beat Championship Barnsley.

Kevin Mellor had given the Tangerines the lead before the Tykes’ Angus MacDonald’s strike sent the match into extra time. Blackpool will travel to Blackburn Rovers for a place in the fifth round.

Meanwhile, Championship Bristol City beat League One Fleetwood 1-0 to move into the fourth round, thanks to Jamie Paterson’s early strike and will face Burnley at Turf Moor.
