FA Cup: Pedro and Diego Costa on target as Chelsea show cutting edge to tame Wolves

Premier League leaders Chelsea showed their class to cruise into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup at the expense of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The cutting edge in the final third proved the difference between the two sides as Chelsea claimed a 2-0 victory in front of a capacity crowd at Molineux.

There were rare run outs for captain John Terry and his defensive partner Kurt Zouma as the heavy favourites shuffled their pack.

However, George Saville gave Antonio Conte’s side an early scare as he struck a post for the hosts in a positive first-half performance from Wolves.

But the deadlock was broken after the hour mark as Chelsea upped their game and Pedro headed home calmly to put the Blues in front.

Diego Costa made absolutely sure of the result, ending his run of 413 minutes without a goal, to ensure a safe passage into round six.

Chelsea captain John Terry told the BBC: “It was a well-fought game today. They started well and made it difficult for us.

“Seeing the other results, this was not going to be easy and it is a tough place to come. We did well in the end.

“It would have been nice for George Savile to score but for players like me and Cesc Fabregas, who have not been playing, we need to come in, do well, keep the run going and give the manager food for thought.

“This year, especially in the Premier League, everyone is beating everyone. You cannot look at the fixture list and go, ‘we can get three points there’. Teams are set up well but most importantly, we are in the hat for the next round.”

Chelsea were one of only two Premier League sides to make it into the hat outright with Leicester City and Burnley dumped out and Manchester City held to a replay.
