Wayne Shaw has resigned from Sutton United in tears, manager Paul Doswell has said.

The 46-year-old reserve goalkeeper rose to fame during United’s FA Cup run which saw them beat Leeds United and AFC Wimbledon to set up last night’s clash with Premier League giants Arsenal.

And the 23-stone goalkeeper was spotted eating a pie after Doswell had made all three substitutes on the night, after SunBet had raised a market on the Sutton man eating a pie mid-game.

Shaw admitted this morning that he was aware of the bet, but insisted he just ate the pie as ‘banter’.

The scenes raised issues over whether the act broke gambling regulations, with the FA and Gambling Commission set to probe the incident.

“Wayne has offered his resignation to the chairman this afternoon and that has been accepted. It’s a very sad end to what was a very good story,” Doswell told Sky News.

“This decision was taken at board level,” he said. “We felt we had to take very strong actions. The chairman spoke to him this afternoon and Wayne offered his resignation.

“I’m devastated, the chairman is devastated. I have spoken to Wayne and the guy is in tears, crying down the phone. It is a very sad situation.”

Sun Bets tweeted after the game that they had paid out a “five-figure sum” on a bet that 46-year-old Shaw would be shown eating a pie.
