FA open Nottingham Forest investigation after 'extremely disappointing' statement following Everton defeat

Anthony Taylor came under fire as Everton beat Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon

The Football Association have confirmed that they have asked for observations from Nottingham Forest, Nuno Espirito Santo, Neco Williams and Mark Clattenburg after the comments they made following the defeat to Everton.

In a separate statement, the Premier League said it was extremely disappointed to read the comments made by Forest, who issued an extraordinary post on social media soon after the final whistle in their 2-0 Premier League defeat at Goodison Park, criticising the decision to reject three penalty claims.

The club said they had 'warned' Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) that VAR Stuart Attwell 'was a Luton fan', but that the referees' body did not change the appointment.

Forest were frustrated about three penalty claims, all involving Everton defender Ashley Young. They felt he caught the back of Gio Reyna's boot in attempting to make a tackle when the game was goalless before a Callum Hudson-Odoi cross struck Young on the arm late in the first half.

The third incident happened after the interval, as Young challenged Hudson-Odoi from behind, but the officials ruled he had won the ball cleanly. Following the statement from Forest, both Nuno and Williams took aim at the officials during post-match interviews, before Clattenburg emphatically defended the club’s stance in a column for a national newspaper.

And in a statement released on Monday afternoon, the Football Association announced it has 'formally requested observations' from Forest, boss Nuno, Williams and Clattenburg following their comments.

The statement read: "We have formally requested observations from Nottingham Forest, Nuno Espirito Santo, Neco Williams and Mark Clattenburg as a result of their comments following their Premier League match against Everton on Sunday 21 April. We will provide any further updates in due course."

While a Premier League statement read: “The Premier League was extremely disappointed to read the comments made by Nottingham Forest on social media yesterday, following its match against Everton.

“We note The FA has confirmed it will be investigating the club’s statement. It is never appropriate to improperly question the integrity of match officials, and the nature of these comments means the Premier League will also be investigating the matter in relation to the League’s Rules.”

Earlier in the day, Forest called for the audio between Attwell and on-field referee Anthony Taylor to be made public.

“Nottingham Forest has today submitted a formal request to the PGMOL to release into the public domain the audio recordings between officials during yesterday’s match against Everton at Goodison Park," the club said in a statement.

“The club has requested this be shared for three key match incidents - Ashley Young’s challenge on Giovanni Reyna (24th minute), Ashley Young’s handball (44th minute) and Ashley Young’s challenge on Callum Hudson-Odoi (56th minute).

“We firmly advocate for the broader football community and supporters to have access to the audio and transcript for full transparency, ensuring the integrity of our sport is upheld.”
