FA Women's Super League: Things we've learned from Round Ten

The FA WSL never disappoints where goals are concerned as Arsenal and Manchester City maintained their unbeaten starts to the season in style on Sunday.

Birmingham City and Reading both secured victories, while West Ham United notched up their third win of the season.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s blistering start to the FA Women’s Championship season continued as they shipped eight past Millwall Lionesses.

This is what we learned from a stunning weekend of action in the FA WSL and Championship:

Gunners have plenty of fight in them

Arsenal showed why they’re the team to beat this season as they fought back from behind to thump Brighton & Hove Albion 4-1.

Joe Montemurro’s side had only conceded once in the FA WSL this campaign, so were in unfamiliar territory when Ini Umotong put the Seagulls ahead.

But when you’ve got a goalscorer like Vianne Miedema up front Arsenal were never going to be behind for long as the Dutch forward slotted her 14th league goal of the season.

And it was a day to savour for Arsenal’s Dutch stars as Dominique Bloodworth and Danielle van de Donk put the Gunners well in front before half-time, with Beth Mead adding another late on.

City make perfect preparation ahead of Gunners clash

Manchester City had little trouble edging past Yeovil Town with a 4-0 away victory, but the match was little more than a precursor to next week’s top-of-the-table clash with Arsenal.

Nick Cushing’s side didn’t have to wait long for their opener as the FA WSL all-time top scorer Nikita Parris notched up her 10th goal of the campaign.

Caroline Weir doubled the advantage before the break as captain Steph Houghton rifled in a free-kick and Claire Emslie tucked in from close range.

Birmingham City aren’t going anywhere just yet

Marc Skinner’s Birmingham City showed they’re more than capable of keeping chase with the top two sides Arsenal and Manchester City as they secured a sixth league win of the season.

The Blues have only lost twice this season, against Manchester City and Arsenal, and showed their quality with a first-half blitz against Liverpool.

Emma Follis put City ahead after just three minutes before her team-mate Connie Scofield rifled in from the edge of the area to seal the three points.

Everton’s luck still hasn’t improved

A league victory hasn’t been celebrated on the blue half of Merseyside all season and since Andy Spence was relieved of his duties, things haven’t got any rosier for bottom of the table Everton.

There were signs of improvement when Hannah Cain put Everton ahead after 13 minutes, but their porous defence again allowed opponents Reading to bite back through Brooke Chaplen.

Then 13 minutes from the end the England U23 forward curled an effort into the net to secure the Royals earned a third win on the bounce and lifted them to fourth in the table.

Meanwhile there will be everything to play for next week as Everton host Liverpool in a derby showdown.

Red Devils show their horns

Even after beating Crystal Palace 5-0 last week Siobhan Chamberlain was calling on her opponents to be more ruthless in front of goal and they certainly rose to the challenge against Millwall as they smashed in eight at home.

Mollie Green slotted a hat-trick before there were goals from Alex Greenwood, Ella Toone, Katie Zelem, Jess Sigsworth and Lauren James as United maintained their unbeaten start to the season.

The result enabled the Reds to leapfrog Tottenham Hotspur to the top of the table with Spurs not in action this weekend.

Elsewhere in the Championship, Durham’s unbeaten start came to an end as they fell 2-0 to Leicester City as Charlton Athletic moved to third in the table.
