Manchester City won’t go down without a fight

When Meaghan Sargeant headed home after half-time to put Birmingham City 2-0 up against 2016 league champions Manchester City, it looked like it would be Marc Skinners’ team’s day.

But when the chips were down, Caroline Weir stepped up to the plate to inspire an incredible comeback.

Scoring via a lucky deflection for her first, there was no element of fortune when the Scot dazzled her way past three Birmingham defenders to lay in Nikita Parris to slot home.

Tessa Wullaert put the icing on the cake with another fortuitous deflection to seal the vital third goal to complete a remarkable 19-minute turn around and claim the win.

Never attempt a 50-yard pass back

Manchester City may have recorded a stunning fightback, but the moment that got everyone talking came when Abbie McManus turned to play the ball back to her goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck.

Standing inside the oppositions half, the 25-year-old fired the ball back to the awaiting Roebuck, who was caught out by the pace and bounce of the ball.

Languishing between the ball and the goal, Roebuck found herself too far out of her area and, despite a despairing leap, she could do nothing to avert the ball flying over her head and into the net to gift Birmingham the lead after eight minutes.

While it was a rare moment of misfortune, McManus certainly won’t be attempting any long-distance pass backs again any time soon.

Chelsea are back

Chelsea rediscovered their scoring streak by beating Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 to claim their first win of the league campaign.

Emma Hayes’ side hadn’t score in the league this season prior to kick-off after earning three successive 0-0 draws.

But the Blues managed to find their shooting boots again after the midweek hammering of Sarajevo in the Champions League, with Fran Kirby scoring the opener with a stunning volley.

Erin Cuthbert doubled their advantage on 35 minutes following an impressive cross from Ji as Drew Spence came on late on for her 150th appearance.

Chaplen off the mark for Reading

Reading’s Brooke Chaplen netted eight goals last season, but she was yet to register a goal this campaign before their clash with Liverpool.

But the 29-year-old’s solitary strike was enough to secure the Royals a second win of the season with a lofted effort from outside the area.

Special praise has to go to Reading defender Kirsty Pearce’s role in the goal, finding the Portsmouth-born forward with an incredible lofted long ball.

The match swung in Kelly Chambers’ Reading’s favour on the hour when Liverpool’s Rhiannon Roberts was handed her marching orders for a second yellow card.

West Ham off the mark

West Ham earned their first win of the season against bottom of the table Yeovil thanks to a late winner from Rosie Kmita.

The substitute denied Yeovil their first point of the season after Ellie Mason scored the Lady Glovers first goal of the league season in the 79th minute.

Leanne Kiernan had given the Irons the lead, but Yeovil showed why they are the much-improved side from last season by pushing West Ham right to the wire.
