Facebook has removed a post in which Donald Trump falsely claimed that coronavirus is less deadly than seasonal flu.

A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the US president's post had been removed because it broke the platform's rules on Covid-19 misinformation.

Mr Trump also posted the same message on Twitter, which now comes with a warning for also breaking its misinformation rules.

It comes after the president was diagnosed with the virus last week and taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre, where he received an unprecedented level of care for Covid-19.

Mr Trump then staged a dramatic return to the White House on Monday evening, entering the building without a protective mask.

He immediately ignited a new controversy by declaring that, despite his illness, the nation should not fear the virus that has killed more than 210,000 Americans.

Writing on Facebook and Twitter, he said: "Flu season is coming up! Many people every year, sometimes over 100,000, and despite the Vaccine, die from the Flu.

"Are we going to close down our Country? No, we have learned to live with it, just like we are learning to live with Covid, in most populations far less lethal!!!"

Twitter flagged the post, saying: "This Tweet violated the Twitter Rules about spreading misleading and potentially harmful information related to COVID-19.

"However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public’s interest for the Tweet to remain accessible."

A Facebook company spokesperson said: "We remove incorrect information about the severity of COVID-19, and have now removed this post.”
