The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed former captain MS Dhoni as Team India’s mentor for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021, scheduled to commence on October 17. Former cricketer Farokh Engineer has welcomed the decision, saying that Dhoni can continue even after the multi-nation tournament.

This will also be his first involvement with the national team since the 2019 World Cup semi-final. Notably, MS Dhoni is one of the most successful captains ever. In fact, he’s the only player to lift the 50-over World Cup, 20-over World Cup, and Champions Trophy as skipper.

Speaking on the same, Farokh Engineer reckons Dhoni’s experience and knowledge would certainly benefit the Virat Kohli-led team.

“I was a bit surprised to see MS Dhoni in this role, but why not? IPL has mentors. Dhoni has always and still has got the Midas touch and whatever he has touched has turned into gold. I would hope that Dhoni brings us extra luck and I’m sure his knowledge would be extremely useful. He is a World Cup-winning captain after all. So, his very presence in the dressing room will have a great effect on the team,” Farokh Engineer told Sports Tak.

Sourav Ganguly reveals why BCCI roped MS Dhoni as a mentor

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly explained the reason behind having Dhoni with the Men in Blue for the global T20 meet. Speaking to The Telegraph, Sourav Ganguly highlighted that having a heavyweight always helps in this kind of premier tournament.

“It’s just to help the side in the World Cup. He has a good record in the T20 format for India and the Chennai Super Kings. There has been a lot of thought behind it. We discussed a lot and then decided to have him on board. We haven’t won an ICC trophy since 2013. Remember Australia had Steve Waugh in a similar role when they drew the Ashes 2-2 in England the last time. The presence of such heavyweights in big-ticket events always helps,” Sourav Ganguly said.
