Barcelona suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Granada on Thursday night with Lionel Messi’s goal in vain as the Camp Nou giants let their LaLiga title advantage slip away.

Barca headed into the home clash knowing that if they kept a perfect record between now and the end of the season, they would have been champions.

Messi got Barca off to the perfect start with a first-half goal, but Darwin Machis equalised for Granada before Barca coach Ronald Koeman received a red card - and worse was to come.

Granada substitute Jorge Molina struck the winner 11 minutes from time to consign Barca to a shock defeat, leaving the Blaugrana two points off leaders Atletico Madrid and level with Clasico rivals Real.

Incredibly, Barca conceived to lose despite having 82 per cent of the possession and 14 shots to Granada’s five, but the visitors scored with their only two efforts on target to earn three points.

Barca still have to play leaders Atletico during the run-in, but Thursday’s surprise result means the title race is still wide open with Atleti, Barca and Real all having five games left to play.
