FC Barcelona vs Manchester City LIVE!

Riyad Mahrez scored from the spot deep into stoppage-time as Manchester City equalised to earn a 3-3 draw against Barcelona at the Nou Camp in a charity match.

The game took place to raise funds for ALS research, in honour of former Barcelona goalkeeper and coach Juan Carlos Unzue who was diagnosed with ALS two years ago. He addressed the crowd ahead of kick-off and then spent time alongside both Pep Guardiola and Xavi in the dugouts during the match, watching what was an entertaining affair as expected.

Julian Alvarez put the visitors in front after capitalising on a goalkeeping error, before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put any uncertainty over his future to one side as he volleyed Barcelona level. Frenkie de Jong did the same as he finished well after the break, and while Cole Palmer swiftly equalised, Memphis Depay came off the bench to restore the lead. There was still time for another goal, as Erling Haaland won a penalty and Mahrez hammered it into the top corner as it finished in a fitting draw.

Looked like being the winner...

23:00 , Matt Verri

22:45 , Matt Verri

Haaland still joking with Christensen after the full-time whistle about that penalty.

We’ll file it under ‘generous’... which in itself is very generous. Either the referee fell for Haaland’s tricks, or he decided it would be fitting if the match finished level.

Either way, Haaland found it very funny!

What it’s all about...

That’s the full-time whistle at the Nou Camp.

Head injury at the end made it a slightly strange conclusion, but City still found time to equalise.

Fitting that the charity match finishes level!

GOAL! Barcelona 3-3 Man City | Riyad Mahrez 99'

22:29 , Matt Verri

And Mahrez makes no mistake!

Fires it into the top corner, goalkeeper has absolutely no chance with that.

PENALTY MAN CITY!

22:29 , Matt Verri

90+8 mins: At least four more minutes to be played.

And City have a penalty! Christensen clips his heels, eventually Haaland stumbles over and the referee points to the point as Haaland laughs.

22:27 , Matt Verri

Mbete is now taken off the pitch, have to hope it’s not as serious as it looked after that nasty clash of heads and it’s just a precaution.

We’re now in the 95th minute of the match. No idea how much added time will be played but it’s likely to be a lot.

22:22 , Matt Verri

No risks being taken here, quite rightly. Mbete still receiving treatment.

Buggy is onto the pitch, he’s being slowly lifted onto a stretched and then will be taken off the pitch.

22:16 , Matt Verri

85 mins: Nasty clash of heads in the City box, Mbete and Christensen both down. Brief break in play while they receive treatment.

22:14 , Matt Verri

83 mins: Corner for City, comes out to Palmer on the opposite wing and he fires a ball into the box but it’s through everyone and out of play for a throw-in.

Still the best part of ten minutes for more goals in this... wouldn’t rule it out.

GOAL! Barcelona 3-2 Man City | Memphis Depay 79'

22:11 , Matt Verri

Depay scores this time though!

We’ve given up on defending apparently. Roberto allowed to bring the ball down out wide, rolls it into the box and Depay is completely free in the middle to hammer home.

22:08 , Matt Verri

77 mins: Big, big chance for Depay.

He’s clean through on goal, only Ortega to beat. Can’t do so though, pretty poor effort in truth.

Behind for a corner, which comes to nothing.

22:06 , Matt Verri

75 mins: Rodri has to quickly scramble across and hammer the ball out of play, with Torre waiting to jump on a loose pass.

Guardiola shaking his head on the touchline. Not particularly impressed, it would appear.

22:03 , Matt Verri

72 mins: Alvarez’s night is over, he could have score four very easily. Haaland on for the visitors.

De Jong and Busquets coming off for Barcelona, Pjanic and Torre introduced. The worst part of friendlies is here... all the subs.

GOAL! Barcelona 2-2 Man City | Cole Palmer 70'

22:01 , Matt Verri

City swiftly level!

Only took a few minutes. Mahrez plays it to Cancelo on the overlap, he drills it across the face of goal and Palmer has a tap in, in the middle. Too easy.

22:00 , Matt Verri

69 mins: Alvarez has to score!

City corner headed out, Cancelo absolutely thunders an effort at goal from almost 40 yards out. Pena takes evasive action and just about keeps it out, spills it to Alvarez who fires over from close range.

GOAL! Barcelona 2-1 Man City | Frenkie de Jong 61'

21:58 , Matt Verri

And yet it’s Barcelona who take the lead! Their first attack of the half and it’s brought a goal.

De Bruyne gives the ball away on the edge of his own box, terrible first involvement. Depay can’t convert, comes back to De Jong and he makes no mistake.

21:57 , Matt Verri

66 mins: Palmer finds himself in loads of space inside on the box on the left, fires a low effort at goal but it’s comfortably saved. Alvarez then very nearly pounces on a loose ball as Pena desperately waits for it to roll into his area... and it just about did.

City much the better side since the break.

21:55 , Matt Verri

64 mins: Speaking of...

De Bruyne is on for City for the final 25 minutes or so. Gundogan and Mbete also introduced. Dias, Foden and Silva stroll off.

21:52 , Matt Verri

61 mins: The boos are back as City pass the ball around, but Mahrez can’t keep that in play right in front of Guardiola.

How long until the City boss gives De Bruyne and Haaland some time on the pitch?

21:49 , Matt Verri

58 mins: Depay, Garcia, Gavi and Balde on for Barcelona. Pique, Alba, Aubameyang and Kessie the four to make way.

Garcia the latest player to get a chance to play against his former club. Will be keen to make an impression, that’s for sure.

21:47 , Matt Verri

56 mins: Phillips gets a knock, seems to have hurt his shoulder in a fairly innocuous looking collision. Injuries not what City have come here for.

Haaland getting a huge ovation as he warms up on the touchline, a couple more sales and wouldn’t put it past Barcelona trying to sign him for the fun of it.

21:45 , Matt Verri

54 mins: Not quite the same intensity since the restart, Barcelona in particular have not got going.

Think the answer is for Guardiola and Xavi to bring themselves on. The midfield battle we deserve to see.

21:43 , Matt Verri

52 mins: Kessie gives the ball away under no pressure, before Dias returns the favour as he strides out of defence and sends it straight out of play.

Cancelo, since he’s come in, is playing in usual ‘wherever you want’ role.

21:41 , Matt Verri

50 mins: One more City change to report, for those keeping track. Wilson-Esbrand on at left-back for Gomez, it was his break into the Barcelona half that started that move.

Barcelona sitting off a lot more since the break, City defenders getting lots of time to just knock it around.

21:39 , Matt Verri

48 mins: Torres the man to be replaced by Fati. Cancelo and Stones are on for Walker and Lewis for City.

HOW HAVE CITY NOT SCORED?!

Lovely move from City, charging into the empty space and towards the Barcelona box, heavy touch though and the hosts half clear it.

Alvarez then pounces on a loose ball in the box though, shot saved when he had to score. Then also denied from the rebound. Gets a third go, lays it off to Mahrez and he blasts wide. Chaos!

Back underway!

21:36 , Matt Verri

Fati on at the break for Barcelona. We are up and running again!

21:33 , Matt Verri

Frenkie de Jong and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have both been impressive for Barcelona.

One doesn’t want to leave, Aubameyang seemingly does... Barcelona might be adding a couple of million to the asking price for both of them!

How Barcelona levelled things up...

21:28 , Matt Verri

Goals to come?

21:24 , Matt Verri

Lewandowski, Depay, Dembele, Pedri. Haaland, De Bruyne, Gundogan, Cancelo.

For those wondering what the benches are like for both sides tonight... don’t you worry!

Plenty of strength there and plenty of goals too you’d say!

HT: Barcelona 1-1 Man City

21:19 , Matt Verri

Referee doesn’t bother with any added time so that will be half-time at the Nou Camp.

Alvarez put City in front from a couple of yards out after a howler from Pena in goal, before Ortega didn’t do much better as Aubameyang’s volley skidded underneath it.

Level at the break!

 (AP)
(AP)

21:17 , Matt Verri

44 mins: Good position this for City, Mahrez brought down right on the edge of the box by a combination of Alba and Busquets. He’ll surely take this, great angle for a left footer.

Loud, loud jeers now from the Barcelona fans. Kounde the lucky man to lie down behind the wall.

Mahrez it is to take, hammered straight into the wall.

21:16 , Matt Verri

42 mins: Kounde with a firm pass straight to a yellow shirt - not sure that was quite the plan.

Lewis then does really well to turn away from Torres a couple of times, those two having a good battle out on the wing.

21:13 , Matt Verri

39 mins: Alvarez tries his luck from the edge of the box, curls high and wide of the far post.

Roberto the latest Barcelona player to be incredibly brave in his own box, pays off though and the hosts can flood forward into the empty space.

That is until Torres runs straight into Lewis.

21:10 , Matt Verri

36 mins: Home fans booing every City touch as the visitors enjoy a sustained spell of possession. Not what they’ve come to see.

Lewis loses the ball though, that cheers them up. Aubameyang feeds it through to Raphinha, his shot is blocked and he then can’t get to the rebound in time.

21:08 , Matt Verri

34 mins: Match is very open, plenty of space on offer for both sides. Palmer has looked bright whenever he’s had the ball, final ball hasn’t quite been there though.

Not a particularly brave prediction to suggest there will be more goals in this. Plenty of them perhaps.

21:05 , Matt Verri

31 mins: Barcelona determined to be generous hosts here.

They give the ball away a couple of times in a terrible area. Ball flashes into the box the first time, nobody there in a City shirt.

Barcelona give it straight back, Silva drives into the box and his curling effort is parried away.

GOAL! Barcelona 1-1 Manchester City | Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 29'

21:02 , Matt Verri

Aubameyang volleys home the equaliser!

Not as bad as the opening goal, but it’s still not great goalkeeping. Ball drops for Aubameyang at the back post, catches the volley really sweetly and it skids underneath Ortega who can’t get down in time.

21:00 , Matt Verri

26 mins: City should double their lead!

Another error at the back from Barcelona, this time from Kounde. Robbed of it just outside his own box, Palmer opts not to pass and instead turns into space before firing at goal. Just over the bar.

20:58 , Matt Verri

24 mins: City growing into the match after that rapid start from Barcelona - obviously helped by an absolute gift for the opening goal.

Barely a celebration from Alvarez, wisely decides this isn’t the time for a full knee slide.

GOAL! Barcelona 0-1 Manchester City | Julian Alvarez 21'

20:55 , Matt Verri

City take the lead!

Pena has had an absolute nightmare in goal for Barcelona. Ball looped into the box, seemingly perfectly into his arms.

Drops it as Alvarez closes in on him though, and the City man pokes into the empty net from a couple of yards out.

20:54 , Matt Verri

20 mins: De Jong has been brilliant so far, very much playing like a man who has a point to prove.

Cuts out Phillips’ pass which would have set Alvarez away, drifts past a couple of challenges and is then hauled down as he looks to play Aubameyang through.

20:52 , Matt Verri

18 mins: Hope someone knows what the world record for offsides in a match is.

Both sides regularly getting caught out by the high lines on show. Linesmen getting a good workout so far.

20:50 , Matt Verri

16 mins: Lovely footwork from Palmer and then a pass to match it as he sets Gomez away down the left wing.

Early cross into the box, Alvarez can’t catch up with it and there’s no other City players who have made a run.

20:47 , Matt Verri

13 mins: Torres roars past Lewis and gets to the byline.

Has time to look up, play the ball across the face of goal. Again it’s cleared away before it reaches Aubameyang.

Tough test for the teenager Lewis tonight, 17-year-old certainly being pushed in the early stages.

20:46 , Matt Verri

12 mins: De Jong slides in on Silva to win the ball back for Barcelona, Dutchman will be very keen to make an impression as he looks to stay at the club.

Foden and Palmer not quite on the same wavelength, ball straight out of play.

20:44 , Matt Verri

10 mins: City have barely had a kick in the opening ten minutes, Barcelona completely dominant. Probably not surprising, they’re almost at full strength tonight.

Silva floating around for the visitors - Guardiola better make sure he gets on the plane home, with Barcelona so keen on signing him this summer.

20:41 , Matt Verri

7 mins: Raphinha tries his luck from range, straight at the goalkeeper.

Alba then gets forward well down the left wing, fires a low cross into the near post where Aubameyang is waiting. Walker gets there in time to put it behind for a corner.

20:39 , Matt Verri

5 mins: Barcelona as calm as ever knocking the ball around in their own box as City press them.

Hosts play around the yellow shirts though and burst forward. Kessie drives towards the box, goes for goal from just inside the area. Decent effort, just wide.

20:37 , Matt Verri

3 mins: BIG CHANCE!

Kounde brings the ball forward, slides a lovely pass through to Roberto and he is completely free on the right wing.

Crosses it into the box, Aubameyang from six yards out heads it straight at Ortega. Had to score really... Chelsea taking £5m off their offer as we speak.

20:35 , Matt Verri

2 mins: Friendly? Sort of.

Ball pinged out to the left wing towards Alba, Lewis charges up from right-back and absolutely clatters into the Barcelona man who looks in a fair bit of pain.

Heavy challenge, Alba will be fine to continue though.

KICK-OFF!

20:34 , Matt Verri

We are up and running at the Nou Camp!

Unzue has taken his place alongside Guardiola in the dugout.

20:31 , Matt Verri

Juan Carlos Unzue has addressed the crowd ahead of kick-off, huge applause from all those inside the stadium.

He kicks the ball over to Busquets, we will be getting underway any minute now!

Here we go

20:28 , Matt Verri

Quite the concert going on at the moment on the pitch, ahead of kick-off.

City players have walked up and lined up as our singer continues to belt out the chorus. Barcelona players out too. Kick-off coming up!

Time for the warm-ups!

Barcelona dominate head-to-head

20:04 , Matt Verri

These teams have met six times in the past, with Man City coming out on top just once.

That was in the most recent meeting, six years ago.

Safe to say neither side will be reading too much into that, nor will there be quite the same intensity tonight as when they’ve previously played each other in the Champions League.

Huge crowd expected

19:54 , Matt Verri

There’s been 87,000 tickets sold for tonight’s clash, with 1,500 Man City fans believed to have made the trip to Barcelona.

Plenty of attacking talent on show from both sides, strong benches, no reason to play cautiously, raising money for a great cause... should be a fun night!

Familiar territory for Guardiola!

19:49 , Matt Verri

De Jong and Aubameyang start

19:43 , Matt Verri

So, Walker is the Man City captain tonight, he and Dias bringing some experience to that backline. Phillips and Alvarez given starts by Guardiola, with Barcelona target Bernardo also in from the off.

For the hosts, De Jong and Aubameyang both start, despite being linked with moves away for most of the summer. Torres starts against his former side, while Kounde finally gets his chance to impress. Lewandowski is named on the bench.

Guardiola: Incredible environment for us

19:12 , Matt Verri

Earlier this week, Pep Guardiola discussed why Manchester City are taking part in this friendly three weeks into the season.

“The benefits? We will be together for the new players, time to train, and recover in a different environment,” Guardiola said.

“We go because Barcelona opened the doors to play a game for important people in our lives.

“They invite us to raise money for a battle that they have. It is in an incredible environment to be there. We will come back here on Thursday, recovery. We will see the draw for the Champions League.”

Chelsea not giving up on Aubameyang

18:55 , Matt Verri

Barcelona are said to be holding out for around £25m for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is thought to have agreed terms with Chelsea.

Discussions over the former Arsenal captain will continue this week and there is optimism on both sides that a deal will be reached, as Chelsea prepare for a hectic final week of the window.

Thomas Tuchel wants to add a proven scorer to his squad and Aubameyang is ready to return to London just seven months after leaving Arsenal.

Prediction

18:36 , Matt Verri

Mad scorelines are fairly standard in these sorts of friendlies and, obviously, the final result means very little.

So, what the hey...

5-3 to Barcelona.

Man City team news

18:25 , Matt Verri

Man City will also use the game to blood their new signings Sergio Gomez, Kalvin Phillips, Julian Alvarez and Stefan Ortega plus a host of youth players.

“What is a strong team for you?” Guardiola said to reporters last week. “I don’t think I will play, though I would love it!

“The players who don’t play against Newcastle for example, the players with a lack of minutes are going to play but the guys who play at Newcastle are going to play too.

“It’s perfect. The best way to take rhythm is playing games. Training is nice but the best way is playing games and the guys who didn’t play much minutes in these two games are going to play and after in September with games every three days everyone is going to play.”
