Fighter Reece McEwan ready to right wrongs as he faces UFC veteran in Braehead
A BRAEHEAD bout lies in wait tonight for Greenock-born MMA fighter Reece McEwan as he bids to bounce back from a disappointing defeat and get his fighting dream back on track.
The home town hero will make his first fighting appearance on Scottish soil since 2021 and hopes he can put on a show for the thousands of local fans set to come along.
His Cage Warriors 171 face-off with UFC veteran Cameron Else will be his first outing since he tasted a bitter defeat last November in a battle for the bantamweight division belt.
The 29-year-old told the Telegraph that he was ready to right the wrongs of his last fight and set down another marker ahead of a major £50,000 prize money tournament later this year.
He said: “There’s a cruel aspect to any fighting sport and that is that. Unlike a sport like football, if you lose you can’t right the wrongs a week later. I’ve had to wait months.
“My face and my body weren’t in the condition to have quick turnaround last time, but I knew there was a Scotland card on the horizon and that’s the date I was waiting on.
“After the last fight there were many sleepless nights and low moments, but when you win it’s the complete opposite and you have to embrace it all.
“You either let it fuel you or break you – I let it fuel me.”
The mixed martial artist is anticipating a strong home support for tonight’s clash at the Braehead Arena and believes the Scottish crowd will make it a special night.
He added: “I’ve been at fights before, shows that my gym has put on, where almost all of the crowd are supporting you and that atmosphere is insane.
“It’s going to be enhanced here, every Scottish fan will be getting behind every Scottish fighter and I want to give them their money’s worth.”
Reece’s loss last year ended a streak of four consecutive wins at Cage Warriors, but the talented athlete believes that a win tonight could spark another successful run.
He said: “The way I’m training, operating and carrying myself each day is fuelled by the fact I was second best last year.
“That doesn’t sit well with me, so in this fight I want to go out and outclass a former UFC fighter and show I’m the best bantamweight in Cage Warriors.
“If people thought I was determined before they should see me now, when someone makes you bleed, and fight for 20 minutes absolutely zapped it makes you realise how hungry you are to win.”
