The first reviews are in for the new Transformers movie Rise of the Beasts, and they're a pretty mixed bag.

The seventh instalment in the action series introduces fans to the Maximals faction of Transformers, as well as new characters including Anthony Ramos's Noah Diaz and Dominique Fishback's Elena Wallace.

Directed by Creed II's Steven Caple Jr, the critical consensus on the sequel is rather divided, with some suggesting it delivers the "thrills" following on from the well-received Bumblebee, while others argued it is another dud in the series.

The movie currently sits at 72% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, but here's what reviewers have been saying:

Variety

"Transformers: Rise of the Beasts isn’t as stylish as Bumblebee, but it’s an example of how a Transformers movie can serve up the escapist-junk-food amusement it promises without giving you a synthetic sugar headache."

The Hollywood Reporter

"Transformers: Rise of the Beasts [is] a de facto sequel to 2018’s Bumblebee that features enough rock ‘em, sock ‘em robot action to thrill the faithful while showcasing appealing performances by Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback as the token humans on hand."

Uproxx

"After an initial exposition dump about a doohickey that lets Transformers travel quickly to other galaxies through space portals, the movie quickly settles into something… pretty good! Tonally, I’d put this somewhere in-between Bumblebee and the first Transformers."

Deadline

"Rise of the Beasts exhibits the usual tenets of the Transformers universe, filled with plot armor thicker than Optimus Prime’s metallic exoskeleton. The narrative crutch of invincibility seems permanently welded to our robotic heroes, which could have been reimagined in a more balanced way by the franchise’s seventh film.

"Sure, there are the usual thrills, but the series needs a touch of that Autobot innovation to transform and rise to new cinematic heights."

IndieWire

"The Hasbro franchise has long benefitted from low expectations, but the latest entry doesn’t come close to a passing grade on the massive curve we’ve already agreed to score it on.

"Steven Caple Jr.’s 1990s-set prequel fails to provide either merit or escapism, seemingly begging you to turn your brain off while bombarding you with stimuli that keep you painfully awake and aware for an unusually long two hours and 16 minutes."

The Guardian

"Every trace of personality has been scrubbed from a series that could once claim the cold consolation of being bizarre in its badness. Even the movies about the hulking, anthropomorphic heaps of space junk require some semblance of a human touch."

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is set for release on June 9.
