Liverpool will be in the market for players this summer. The Reds only need a few tweaks rather than major changes following a strong season in 2023/24. Moreover, given the average age of the squad is relatively young, there's simply no need to make sweeping decisions.

Yet the club will still buy when needed or if an opportunity comes along. One of those linked with a move to Anfield as of late has been Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.

Wirtz was one of Xabi Alonso's key men in Leverkusen's title-winning season, with the German side going the whole domestic campaign unbeaten and winning the cup and league double. Such a season has led to speculation that Wirtz could be on the move this summer, with Liverpool and Real Madrid said to be eyeing his signature.

Yet the player's father, who also acts as his agent, told German outlet Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger back in March that his son will remain in Leverkusen for several more years and is in no hurry to leave. "Florian has a contract in Leverkusen until 2027," he said. "There is no answer to what happens when. We should wait for the next two years and then we will see where the path leads."

However, Spanish source Marca believes that Wirtz is only going to remain in the Bundesliga for one more season, and that he 21-year-old will join Real Madrid in the summer of 2025 — along with coach Alonso — in a $162m (£127m/€150m) deal, with 'personal terms' already agreed between Wirtz and the reigning European champions.

Alonso spurned the chance to become Liverpool coach this summer, instead opting to remain at Leverkusen one more year, which could lead to him being lined up as the new Madrid boss once Carlo Ancelotti leaves at the end of his contract in 2026.

Wirtz scored 11 times and produced 12 assists in the Bundesliga last season. Leverkusen also reached the final of the Europa League, almost completing an unbeaten treble, but ultimately falling at the last hurdle to Gian Piero Gasperini's Atalanta in Dublin, losing 3-0.

Liverpool.com says: It makes sense for Wirtz to stay another season with Leverkusen to see where the team could go in the Champions League with Xabi Alonso still as coach. If the figures mentioned in the Marca report are even close to true, Liverpool isn't paying that kind of money for Wirtz, no matter how good he's been. Where and when he goes will be interesting.
