Championship: Aston Villa confirm appointment of Steve Bruce as manager

Aston Villa have named Steve Bruce as their new manager following the departure of Roberto Di Matteo.

Bruce has been out of work since the summer after quitting Hull City despite leading them back into the Premier League.

Di Matteo was given the boot earlier this month having overseen a dismal start to the season and spent heavily in the transfer market.

Aston Villa owner Tony Xia confirmed on his Twitter account that an appointment was imminent last night and was convinced by Bruce’s track record of winning promotions.

Bruce, who has also managed the likes of Birmingham City and Sunderland, has lifted teams into the top flight on four occasions.

The Villa board see the 55-year-old free agent as a safe pair of hands to steady the ship after one win in the club’s opening 10 Championship fixtures which cost Di Matteo his job.

Bruce becomes the club’s sixth manager since Tim Sherwood took control in February 2015 and his new side are 19th in the league table as they prepare to host Wolves on Saturday.
