Football Manager Predicts Jose Mourinho's First Three Seasons at Man United

Jose Mourinho has finally been confirmed as Manchester United boss, and will attempt to return the club to its glory days, something which has failed to materialise since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure.

The former Chelsea boss has quite an impressive CV, having won the Premier League title and the Capital One Cup just over a year ago.

He was unable to produce results this past season, though, and was shown the door at Stamford Bridge for the second time, following a loss to eventual champions Leicester City back in December.

Whether or not he will be a success at United has long been a topic of debate. The folks at Squawka have attempted to bring a bit of closure to the matter by using Football Manager to predict the Portuguese's first three years at Old Trafford.

Mourinho brings in Javi Martinez from Bayern Munich, Achraaf Lazaar from Palermo, Mario Fernandes from CSKA Moscow and Vitolo from Sevilla - all for £64m, while selling Marouane Fellaini to PSG for £6.75m.

In the end, he wins no silverware, finishing second in the Premier League. United gets knocked out of the quarter final of the Europa League by Roma, also exiting the Capital One Cup in fourth round after losing to Arsenal.

They lose out to Aston Villa in the third round of the FA Cup as well.

Mourinho finally gets his hands on John Stones, also bringing in Mario Mandzukic from Juventus, Rafinha from Barcelona, Nolito from Celta Vigo and Jeremy Mathieu from Barcelona for a total of £123m.

To the utter dismay of United fans, Marcus Rashford is sold to Newcastle while Nick Powell leaves for Bournemouth. Marcos Rojo is snatched up by Real Madrid, and Mourinho recoups £13.85m from the sales.

Surprisingly , the Portuguese goes yet another season without a major trophy, finishing second in the Premier League again. He does get to the Champions League final, but suffers a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Barcelona.

Chelsea dump United out of both the FA Cup (quarter final) and Capital One Cup (fourth round).

In the final year of his contract, Mourinho spends £59m to acquire Domenico Berardi from Sassuolo and Kevin Volland from Hoffenheim.

Jesse Lingard is sold to Southampton, Jeremy Mathieu heads to Lyon, while Antonio Valencia leaves for Genoa. A host of academy graduates are released; Paddy McNair one of them.

The Portuguese delivers this time around, however, winning his fourth Premier League title, as well as the Capital One Cup by beating Arsenal 2-1 in the final.

Meanwhile, he misses out on the Champions League trophy, getting beaten again by Barcelona, this time in the semis. The club is also dumped out of the FA Cup, following a third-round loss to Sheffield Wednesday.
