Former Liverpool midfielder Luis Alberto is set to undergo a medical at Al-Duhail 'early next week' ahead of completing a move to the Qatari-based side.

Alberto, who joined the Reds from Sevilla in 2013, made just 12 appearances and spent three years on Merseyside before leaving the club to join Lazio. He has been at the Serie A outfit ever since, playing 307 matches and scoring 52 goals during his time at the Stadio Olimpico.

However, Alberto is closing in on a move away from Lazio and to the Middle East. According to Relevo, the 31-year-old has agreed to join Al-Duhail for around £8.5million. Liverpool are expected to receive a 12 per cent sell on fee from the sale, though, with the Reds set to gain around £1m.

Al-Duhail are ready to sign Alberto to replace fellow ex-Reds midfielder Philippe Coutinho, who spent the 2023/24 season on loan at the Qatar Stars League club. Coutinho joined from Aston Villa and scored seven goals and added three assists in 22 appearances during his time at the Doha-based outfit.

Despite signing a contract extension in October 2023, Alberto is on his way out of Lazio. However, his exit is not a surprise. He revealed back in April that he wanted to leave the club. "In football nothing is done, it’s complicated but we have to have a clear head for the remaining games," he told DAZN.

"For me it has been a difficult few weeks, with everything that has happened. Project? I don’t know, but I know that this is my last season here, I won’t be part of it any longer.

"I don’t want to take one more Euro from Lazio, I've already asked for my contract to be terminated. I'll leave the next four years to others – rightly so, stepping aside from this club has given me a lot. The time has come to step aside and leave my salary to others."
