Forgotten Liverpool star who Sir Kenny Dalglish chased for six months looks unrecognizable

Liverpool has had one or two bleak patches in its illustrious history. Kenny Dalglish took over for a second time at a particularly low point — and one of the relative 'stars' of that era, more or less forgotten at Anfield, looks practically unrecognizable these days.

Dalglish took over from Roy Hodgson in the early days of the FSG era. The Liverpool legend restored some good feeling at the club, bedding in future star Luis Suarez and even signing off with a League Cup trophy and an FA Cup final.

But he could only lead the club to eighth in his one full season at the helm, and FSG replaced him with Brendan Rodgers. In the wake of the title tilt that followed in 2013/14, and the subsequent arrival of Jurgen Klopp in 2015, Dalglish's side has almost been lost to time.

Undoubtedly the biggest success story from the Dalglish era was Jordan Henderson, who went on to captain the club to success in every major competition under Klopp. That was despite Rodgers reportedly being ready to sell him.

And that was the fate that indeed befell one of Henderson's midfield partners. While one became a Liverpool legend, the other lasted just one campaign, signing for Stoke City the following summer.

After that, his career took him to Reading and finally Dundee. He's now set out on a journey as a manager, and last year was appointed at Fleetwood Town, where he remains to this day. I assume you've worked out who it is by now.

Charlie Adam's new look

Of course, it had to be Charlie Adam. Signed in Dalglish's only summer transfer window, the manager admitted he had spent months chasing after the Scot:

"We're delighted our patience has paid off," he said at the time, via the BBC. "We tried to sign Charlie in January. Blackpool wanted to keep him, which is understandable because they were trying to maintain their status in the Premier League.

"Our interest never went away. Both the club and Charlie have been patient, and then Blackpool's circumstances changed because they were relegated.

"We're looking forward to Charlie being a success here. He made a huge contribution to Blackpool's team last year and we're looking forward to him making the same contribution here.

"We know what he's got and that's why he was such a success last year in the Premier League."

That success ultimately never really carried over to Anfield. Dalglish certainly committed to his signing, with Adam making 28 Premier League appearances in his one season at the club, but he was quickly moved on by Rodgers.

Adam also played the full 120 minutes against Cardiff in Liverpool's League Cup success. He missed his spot kick in the shootout, but was spared his blushes when Steven Gerrard's cousin Anthony missed the crucial final penalty.

Liverpool.com says: With two goals and six assists from midfield, Adam wasn't among the worst performers in that strange era for Liverpool. But it speaks volumes about the period that he was signed to be one of the stars of the team.

Still, we wish him the best of luck as a manager. He suffered relegation with Fleetwood last season, but he's currently setting out on his UEFA Pro License with the Scottish FA.
