Former Liverpool midfielder Nuri Sahin has been named as the new Borussia Dortmund head coach in his second senior managerial role.

The 35-year-old enjoyed a short spell at Anfield under Brendan Rodgers during the 2011/12 season, where he made 12 appearances, after signing on loan from Real Madrid before returning to the Spanish capital in the following January.

Sahin takes up his second role in management after becoming Antalyaspor manager following his retirement in 2022. He joined the Turkish Super Lig outfit before he made the switch to Edin Terzic's backroom staff in December and with the news of the German's resignation, he has made the step up to the head coach role.

The former Turkey international replaces Terzic after the German stepped down from the Signal Iduna Park post, weeks after they suffered heartache in the Champions League final losing to Carlo Ancelotti's Real Madrid at Wembley.

"It is a great honour for me to be the coach of Borussia Dortmund," Sahin told the official Dortmund website. "I would like to thank everyone in charge at the club for the trust they have placed in me. I am really looking forward to my job at BVB.

"From day one, we will do everything we can with a lot of energy and great passion to achieve the maximum possible success."

It was under iconic Reds manager Jurgen Klopp that Sahin made the most appearances in his playing career. Throughout his time in Dortmund, he made 274 appearances for the German club winning the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal in multiple spells with the club.

Klopp had a successful tenure at Signal Iduna Park prior to his move to Anfield and Sahin spoke highly of his former boss in an interview with Sky Sports. He said: "Jurgen was unbelievable at it. He never spoke to you as a football player. He always spoke to you as a human being.

"I had that message on the wall of my office to remind me that I am not a coach of a football player, I am the coach of a human being. To be honest, I also had coaches where the man-management was not the best. I never want the players to feel how I felt sometimes."
