Former Reading boss takes charge of Mexican giants after Championship near-miss

Former Reading manager Veljko Paunovic has opted to remain in Mexico and take charge of giants Tigres after narrowly missing out on the title with Guadalajara.

'Pauno' took charge of the Royals in 2020 and led the club to a seventh-place finish, the highest finish for a decade, but departed after struggling in a relegation battle.

His reign included an infamous FA Cup exit at the hands of National League North side Kidderminster Harriers, as well as a club-record 7-0 home defeat against Fulham.

Docked six points for financial mismanagement, Paul Ince took temporary charge and managed to haul the Royals over the safety line.

The 46-year-old moved to Mexico within months of departing Berkshire and took Guadalajara to the championship final in his first season.

Ironically, it was Tigres who snatched the title in 2023, with Paunovic opting to join the rivals six months later.

Nuno Gomes and Quinton Fortune, who were both assistant coaches at Reading, have joined Paunovic in Monterrey.
