Former Reading goalkeeper Luke Southwood has signed a two-year deal with Bolton Wanderers after confirming his departure from recently relegated Cheltenham Town.

The 26-year-old rose through the ranks in Berkshire and made 26 first-team appearances for the Royals before departing in 2022.

Originally moving to Whaddon Road on loan, Southwood enjoyed two seasons as an ever-present for the Robins, making almost 100 appearances and winning Player of the Season last year.

Darrell Clarke's side were relegated to League Two on the final day and Southwood suffered a broken leg in a disappointing close to his spell in Gloucestershire.

Bolton, losing play-off finalists, have confirmed the Northern Ireland international on a long-term deal to keep him in the third tier and line up another return to RG2 with the Trotters.

Southwood told Bolton Wanderers: “I’m absolutely buzzing to get it over the line.

“There is so many reasons (why I’ve joined). Playing against Bolton over the last couple of years and seeing the fans here is enough of a reason in itself.

“Speaking to the lads I know that are already here also made it an easy decision. The Gaffer then explained what his plans were and what he wants to see from both myself and the team, and I was on board with it straight away.

“As soon as this opportunity came around, I couldn’t wait to get it done. I just can’t wait to get going now.

“Everyone knows what the goal is for this season, and we’ll be doing all we can to make it happen.”
