Former Town forward released by newly-promoted Championship club

Former Ipswich Town forward Martyn Waghorn is now a free agent after his contract expired at newly-promoted Championship side Derby County.

The 34-year-old returned to the Rams for a second spell last summer after joining from Coventry City, having spent three years at Pride Park between 2018 to 2021.

Waghorn scored seven goals in 27 games as Paul Warne's side finished second in the table with 92 points to end their two-year stay in League One.

He is one of six players to be released by Derby, with two other former Town players among them in Conor Hourihane and Scott Loach.

Hourihane leaves Derby after making 98 appearances across two seasons, scoring on 13 occasions. He wore the captain’s armband throughout the 2023/24 campaign.

The midfielder didn't make an appearance at Town under Roy Keane's management in the 2010/11 season.

Loach has been at the Rams since 2022, being their third choice keeper this season but hasn't made an appearance during the 2023/24 campaign.

He leaves Derby after making just three cup appearances, while he featured 33 times for Ipswich between 2012 to 2014.

Waghorn scored 16 goals in 46 games during his one season at Town before leaving the club to join Derby for his first spell in 2018.
