Crystal Palace are poised to end their long hunt for a successor to Sam Allardyce after offering Frank de Boer the job of manager at Selhurst Park, which could leave the path clear for Mauricio Pellegrino to take over at Southampton.

Palace have been looking for a new manager since Allardyce surprisingly resigned last month after guiding the club to Premier League safety.

Chairman Steve Parish, in accordance with the club’s American major shareholders Josh Harris and David Blitzer, has conducted a lengthy interview process, which was complicated by Southampton sacking Claude Puel.

De Boer and former Alaves manager Pellegrino made it on to the shortlists of both Palace and Southampton, but Palace have made the first move by making the Dutchman an offer.

It is expected former Ajax and Inter Milan manager De Boer will accept the job, with talks ongoing over the finer details of his contract and his backroom staff.

Pellegrino is now expected to replace Puel at Southampton, having already been interviewed by the club.

De Boer will become Palace’s fifth permanent manager in four years and will be given funds to spend in the transfer market, despite Palace making a number of signings in the January window.

As a manager, De Boer won the Eredivisie four times with Ajax, but lasted only 85 days at Inter Milan after being appointed as Roberto Mancini’s successor in August last year.

The Palace first-team squad are due back to preseason training on July 2 and compete in the Premier League Trophy in Hong Kong later next month.
