Frank Lampard is set to receive an apology from Gary Lineker after a gag from the Match of the Day presenter backfired.

Following Germany's Euro 2024 triumph over Hungary, Lineker couldn't resist making a sly remark about Lampard's alleged hair loss while discussing the BBC studio's impressive backdrop, near Berlin's Brandenburg Gate.

Behind the historic monument is the back of a giant screen, where tens of thousands of fans had just watched the host nation’s victory. Lineker remarked that the fans would be visible if the screen was taken down, but added: "If they took the screen down they wouldn't be able to watch the game."

With a touch of self-deprecation, the Chelsea legend chimed in, saying: "They'd see my head. They wouldn't turn up for that!" Lineker then delivered a rather sharp-tongued retort: "No you're right, nobody wants to see the back of your head these days, that's for sure."

The exchange caused Lampard's smile to quickly fade, with a clip of the exchange amassing more than 3million views on social media. Realising the backlash and the buzz created by his comment, Lineker insisted he hadn't intended any disrespect, reports the Express.

He said on The Rest Is Football podcast alongside co-host Micah Richards: "I got myself in a bit of a pickle with Frank Lampard, it's gone viral. I feel bad. I didn't mean it the way it came out. But it's quite funny and Frank's as good as gold, he doesn't mind."

Lineker explained: "Obviously, Frank's slightly thinning, I'm slightly thinning, and I actually meant it about everyone. But when it came out, it came out a bit wrong. And you know Frank does that thing where he smiles, and then he suddenly doesn't smile?

"Frank's great fun, he won't mind. I must admit, when I got back to the hotel and saw it on social media, I went, 'Oh you f****** idiot'. I felt really bad, I'll have to apologise. It wasn't deliberate but I get how funny it was. Those things happen on live TV."

Lampard is working as a pundit for the Beeb in Germany while his wait for a next managerial job goes on. He last took charge of Chelsea on an interim basis to see out the 2022/23 season.
