With the French Open in full swing, events off the clay courts have dominated so far at Roland Garros.
The grand slams had threatened the world number two with disqualification and a ban from future tournaments if she did not reverse her decision not to fulfil her media commitments fanned the flames of what had already become a major talking point.
Following Osaka revealing her mental health struggles, the grand slams have vowed to work to improve the player experience after an initial strongly-worded statement.
Tournament organisers will be hoping that attentions will now return to the action on the court, but the incident shows there is much work yet to be done.
