Future of Sunderland head coach 'targets' decided & Still interest as search goes on
SUNDERLAND head coach target Danny Rohl is set to stay at Sheffield Wednesday this summer, with the German boss telling media in his homeland he wants "continuity" and is targeting a top 10 finish next season.
In an interview with Kicker, Rohl outlines his desire to stay at Hillsborough, with a three-year deal set to be confirmed this summer.
It's a huge boost for Wednesday, who pulled off a remarkable escape act in the Championship after Rohl took charge last October.
His outstanding work in charge of the Owls caught the attention of a string of clubs, including Sunderland, who are still on the lookout for a new head coach to replace Michael Beale.
The Black Cats have monitored Rohl developments but it always felt unlikely that the 35-year-old would take charge at the Stadium of Light, particularly when news emerged of the substantial compensation that would be required to prise the in-demand boss from Hillsborough.
And his Wednesday stay is now set to be confirmed.
"Continuity in my own career is good for me," he said.
"It is helpful for my personal development to continue here. It would be good if we could stabilise and develop the whole thing and a place in the top ten of the league would be a good next step."
Rohl said it's now "essential" that Wednesday improve their squad this summer.

Rohl developments follow confirmation on Thursday that Bo Svensson, another head coach said to have been on Sunderland's radar, has taken over at Union Berlin.
The 44-year-old had been out of work since leaving Mainz last November.
He said: "I've been watching Union for a long time and I'm sure I'll find good conditions here for successful work.
“The unity that Union radiate, and the togetherness between the team, fans, staff and club management, is a very important factor. I'm looking forward to the road ahead of us and will do everything I can to ensure that we have a successful season."
Meanwhile, Norwich City have this week held talks with Will Still as the Canaries look for a replacement for David Wagner.
The 31-year-old, a free agent after his Reims exit, is said to have visited Norwich's training ground this week, but at this stage is one a number of bosses under consideration.
Paul Heckingbottom, another head coach to have been linked with Sunderland, was reportedly set for talks with Plymouth this week - though Argyle are said to be preparing to hold talks with Wayne Rooney.
Francesco Farioli, not a target for Sunderland in their search to replace Beale but previously on the club's radar, has been confirmed as new boss of Ajax.
