Gary Lineker and Jamie Carragher send messages to Alan Hansen with Liverpool legend seriously ill

Gary Lineker and Jamie Carragher have rallied around to send their best wishes to Liverpool legend Alan Hansen, as the club confirmed his serious illness in hospital.

Hansen, a titan of Liverpool's defense after signing in 1977 with a total of 620 appearances and a haul of 25 major honors including eight league titles and three European Cups, is currently battling illness at the age of 68.

The football world has been quick to show support, with Lineker and Carragher leading the tributes. Lineker took to social media to express his concern: "Horrendous news," he posted on X. "Thoughts are with Alan, Janet and all the family."

Carragher also used X to share his reaction to the club's statement, posting the club handle alongside the fingers crossed and love heart emojis.

Liverpool FC shared a heartfelt message on Sunday afternoon, stating: "The thoughts and support of everyone at Liverpool FC are with our legendary former captain Alan Hansen, who is currently seriously ill in hospital."

They paid homage to Hansen's elegance on the pitch and his remarkable success during his 14-year tenure after joining from Partick Thistle in 1977, which saw him lift numerous trophies including league titles, European Cups, FA Cups, and League Cups.

"'Jocky', as he was known by teammates, is in the top 10 for all-time appearances for the club having played 620 matches, and the Scottish center-back also served as Liverpool skipper for four seasons," the club statement continued.

"The club is currently in contact with Alan's family to provide our support at this difficult time, and our thoughts, wishes and hopes are with Alan and all of the Hansen family. We will provide any further updates as we receive them in due course, and we request that the Hansen family's privacy is respected at this time."
